Year 4 Autumn Term Curriculum

Maths
This term in Maths, we will be covering the following number objectives:
Count in multiples of 6, 7, 9. 25 and 1000.
Find 1000 more or less than a given number.
Recognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens and ones)
Order and compare numbers beyond 1000.
Round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000.
Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate.
Solve addition and subtraction two step problems in contexts.
Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12.
Multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout.
Solve problems involving multiplying and adding. / Literacy
This term in Literacy, we will be focussing on Narrative - Stories with Historical Settings, Non-Fiction - Newspapers and Magazines, and Poetry - Creating Images.
Speaking and Listening
To articulate and justify opinion on a character, event or situation in response to a question or prompt.
Reading
Tomake inferences about a text, referring to information from the text in order to justify a point of view.
Writing
To organise ideas into paragraphs around a theme.
To use simple adverbials to start sentences.
SPaG
To use expanded noun phrases with modifying adjectives and prepositions.
To use fronted adverbials for when.
Science
This term we will be covering two topics – States of Matter and Animals including Humans.
In the first topic, we will observe the human skeleton and nutrition. We will learn about the importance of nutrition, types of nutrients and how much we need. Furthermore, we will look at the human skeleton, naming types of bones, with a final focus on muscles.
In the latter topic, we will look at howwe use electricity in our homes, making a working series circuit, exploring how a switch works and investigating what are electrical conductors & insulators. / History
This term we will be learning about Early Civilisations, with a particular focus on Ancient Egypt.
To identify the achievements of the early civilizations.
To identify and describe the reasons for the Nile’s importance in Ancient Egypt.
To understand how Ancient Egyptians would have written and recorded numbers.
To use evidence to weigh-up and decide who built the pyramids.
To find different reasons why Ancient Egypt might have come to an end.
Computing
In Computing, we will be focussing on Digital Image.
Digital Image will explore being able to independently capture, store, retrieve and edit a digital image, developing greater control over the digital stills video camera and use the enhanced tools (Macro, Landscape, Zoom). They will create a short-animated sequence from captured images in simple storyboarding software to communicate a specific idea. / Art and Design
Our Art topic is Autumn.
To draw leaves in pencil.
To show colour with paint, pastels and pencils.
To use printing techniques.
To experiment with collage.
To learn about great artists, architects and
designers in history in the context of Henri
Matisse, Cy Twombly, John Constable, Thomas Cole, Paul Cezanne and Claude Monet.
Design and Technology
Light it Up (Link to Science)
Children will investigate different types of lights and will design and make their own light, using a simple circuit with a switch. / RE
In RE, we will be focussing on Christianity.
Children will focus on the main beliefs, special places, festivals, holy books and symbols.
PE
Children will attend weekly swimming lessons at Dunston Leisure Centre. Furthermore, they will be taught dance and invasion games. / French
Children will learn about colours, parts of the body, zoo animals and Christmas. / Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Children will focus on new beginnings, focusing on how they feel about and deal with change.
