Student Loans Company is a non-profit making Government-owned organisation set up in 1989 to provide loans and grants to students in universities and colleges in the UK.We are responsible, in partnership with Local Authorities in England and Wales, the Student Awards Agency for Scotland, the Education and Library boards in Northern Ireland, the Higher Education Institutions and HM Revenue & Customs, for student support delivery in the UK.
We are undertaking a Transformation programme of work to help us achieve our vision, which is to become a digital, customer focused centre of excellence. In order to achieve this, the programme is divided around four key areas: Core Systems Replacement, Digital Delivery, Business Improvements and Organisation Design and Efficiency.
Job Purpose
- To support the department managers by monitoring and registering incoming information requests
- To deliver standard extracts and reports to users according to the agreed schedule (weekly and monthly schedules)
- To deliver results for ad-hoc information requests of small to medium complexity by following the department information request process
- To work with the rest of the department to continuously improve the SLC strategic MI system (i.e. the Data Warehouse and Microstrategy)
- To operate procedures for the control of access via the Microstrategy application
- Provide administrative support to the department managers for them to manage the ad-hoc information request workload and Microstrategy User Access requests.
- Build and maintain good working relationships with the customers of the department’s services in the SLC operational departments.
- Deliver standard extracts and reports on time and to the required level of quality.
- Develop results for ad-hoc information requests in line with the department information request process
- Perform quality assurance of other department member’s ad-hoc information request results.
- Maintain a good understanding of the SLC strategic MI system (Microstrategy) in order to help the department’s customers make the best use of that system.
Essential Skills / Experience / Qualifications
- Ability to interpret a simple business reporting requirement into a solution that SLC can deliver with its current data sources and reporting tools.
- Ability to investigate database contents and write scripts to extract data.
- Practical experience of using SQL to query databases.
- Comprehensive awareness of Information Assurance policies and protocols
- Ability to develop a strong working relationship with business customers at an operational level.
- Proven experience in the creation and presentation of simple analyses to Operational Managers.
- Committed to a team approach to the delivery of services.

- Approachable and able to develop and mentor peers such as placement students and secondees.
- Training or a qualification in Information Management, Statistics, or ICT systems development (analysis, design and coding).
- Practical experience of using an end user reporting tool such as Microstrategy, Business Objects, Cognos etc.
- Experience of helping with the production of Official Statistics
- Ability to deliver training in Business Intelligence tools or other analytical tools
