Incorporating Theory
Nursing is a profession where evidence based practices are of great importance. In case of reducing the number of incidents of falls in inpatients, it is extremely important that the theory of goal attainment by Imogene King be utilized. The proposed solution is to have hourly rounds on inpatients and this can help ensure better supervision and timely help. Evidence based approach is extremely crucial in case of healthcare practices. It is essential that evidence based approach be understood in order to apply it appropriately in health care services. This paper will discuss the theory of goal attainment with emphasis in hourly rounding.
Chosen theory and rationale
The goal attainment theory ensures that supervision of patients is effective. The staff is constantly on rounds every hour by taking turns and this helps monitor inpatients effectively. It helps ensure that the four Ps- pain, position, potty and proximity are continuously in check. Studies have shown that hourly rounding decrease falls, call lights and patient satisfaction increases. In addition, mistakes like wet floor, obstacles or any potential danger can be eliminated just by doing hourly rounds on inpatints (Hjørland, 2011).
How the theory can support the solution
This theory does support the solution as it helps ensure that monitoring takes place and the levels of safety for the patients is significantly increased. Moreover it also helps ensure that there is effective prevention of accidents in the hospital. Evidence based approach can be defined in case of healthcare practice as the "usage of practices that are practical and are based on quantitative research" and this suggests that monitoring and supervision can be the best solution for reduction in falls (Peile, 2004).
Incorporation of theory
The evidence based approach is of great importance in several fields. It is essential in these cases that there be appropriate basis formed for rationalization so that decisions can be made. It provides a set of solutions which are already tried and tested, thus proving to be more accurate results. This form of research is preferred in the medical related domains in several developed nations. The incorporation of the results of research indicate that it would be in the best interest to use monitoring and supervision practices for the purpose of creating a better and safe physical environment for patients.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the goal attainment theory has been chosen to support the solution. Evidence generated from qualitative methods are combined with trends and tendencies allocated in quantitative methods and this helps form strong decisions based on evidence and with multiple aspects being researched on. So bias and interpretations do not influence these decisions, but research and evidence does. The use of evidence approach helps ensure that there be appropriate decision making in the field of nursing.
