I.Texas Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)
Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment rose slightly in February by 2,100 jobs, following a revised increase of 31,200 jobs in January. Despite the February gain, the current tally fell short of the five-year average increase of 27,600 jobs. The Service-Providing sector provided the increase with 20,800 positions added, while the Goods-Producing sector contracted by 18,700 positions. Since February 2015, 170,900 jobs were added, marking 70 consecutive months of positive annualized growth.
Education and Health Services employment rose for the 37th consecutive month with a gain of 6,100 jobs in February. This gain was less than the 6,800 jobs amassed in February 2015, but was over twice the average increase of 2,900 positions. Educational Services employment grew by 0.6 percent over the month, while Health Care and Social Assistance trailed at a 0.4 percent increase. Education and Health Services employment has expanded annually every month in the recorded series with 59,900 jobs gained over the year in February.
Employment in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities rose for the fourth consecutive month with a gain of 5,500 jobs in February. Retail Trade employment rose by 4,300 jobs, followed by Wholesale Trade with an increase of 2,700 positions. Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities employment declined by 1,500 jobs. The annual growth rate for Trade, Transportation, and Utilities remained unchanged since December 2015 with a reading of 2.3 percent.
Professional and Business Services employment rose for the 11th consecutive month with 3,900 jobs gained in February. Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services boosted employment with a gain of 3,900 jobs, while Management of Companies and Enterprises increased by 100 jobs, and Administrative, Support, and Waste Management Remediation Services lost 100 jobs. Despite annual growth being slightly more than a third of the jobs gained in February 2015, the industry has enjoyed positive annual growth for 71 consecutive months with 25,500 jobs added over the year in February 2016.
Leisure and Hospitality jobs rose by 3,900 positions, which marked the 13th monthly increase since January 2015. Accommodations and Food Services added the bulk of the increase with 2,700 jobs, while Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation contributed 1,200 positions. Both these sectors increased over the year, with Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation expanding by 6.6 percent, while Accommodations and Food Services followed at 5.2 percent.
Information employment reversed course from a two-month slide, adding 2,300 jobs in February. Despite a combined job decrease of 900 for December and January, the industry gained 1,400 positions over this three-month period. Information jobs also rebounded over the year with an increase of 1,300 jobs in February following four consecutive months of decreases.
Employment in Other Services rebounded from a revised decrease of 2,400 jobs in January to a gain of 900 jobs in February. The industry approached peak employment of 422,600 jobs set in December 2015 with a level of 421,100 jobs in February. Over the year, Other Services jobs increased by 1.7 percent.
Government employment rose for the fourth consecutive month with 500 jobs added in February. Federal Government added 800 jobs, while State Government contributed 700 positions. Local Government employment contrasted with a decrease of 1,000 jobs. Government employment grew by 28,100 positions over the year.
Employment in Financial Activities fell by 2,300 jobs in what marked the first over-the-month decrease since a loss of 100 jobs was recorded for December 2013. Despite the February decrease, the three-month total increase of 3,400 jobs outperformed average gain for this time frame of 2,000 jobs. Over the year, this industry added 17,900 jobs, which equated to a 2.5 percent annual growth rate.

There have been no additional revisions to the sub-state labor force estimates for 2010 to 2015. There will not be a third round of revisions to 2010 to 2015 estimates as was anticipated with the Release Schedule published last month. Finalized estimates are currently available on the TRACER website.

IV.Texas MSANonagricultural Wage & Salary Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)
Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment rose by 63,500 positions in February to reach an estimated employment level of 10,892,400 jobs within the Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The over-the-month increase marked the tenth increase over the past twelve months and was a reversal of the revised seasonal decline of 165,000 jobs in January. Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment rose in 22 areas led by the Dallas-Plano-Irving area with 19,800 jobs. The College Station-Bryan MSA led all areas in percentage terms with a 3.4 percent uptick in employment. Since February 2015, employment within the Metropolitan Areas rose by 224,500 positions. This equaled a 2.1 percent annual growth rate and marked 70 consecutive months of positive annualized growth. Twenty-one areas grew over the year, led by the Dallas-Plano-Irving area and the College Station-Bryan MSA, which both rose by 4.5 percent over the year. The Austin-Round Rock and the Killeen-Temple MSAs followed with annual growth rates of 4.2 and 3.5 percent, respectively.
Government employment experienced a seasonal increase of 31,100 positions in February as schools increased hiring due to the conclusion of the winter break. The over-the-month increase outperformed the five-year average increase for February of 26,700 jobs. The three-month total gain of 1,800 jobs stood above the 2,800 jobs lost last year over the same time frame. Following the February seasonal trend, Government employment grew in 22 areas over the month, led in percentage terms by the College Station-Bryan MSA with a 7.9 percent increase. The Amarillo and the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSAs followed with monthly increases of 3.4 percent and 3.2 percent. Since February 2015, Government employment expanded by 33,900 positions to end the year at a level of 1,658,600 jobs with an annual growth rate of 2.1 percent. Reflecting this upward movement, Government employment increased in 23 areas annually and was led in percentage terms by the College Station-Bryan and the Odessa MSAs with 5.0 and 4.1 percent respective increases.
The Leisure and Hospitality industry rebounded from a revised seasonal January decrease of 16,900 jobs by adding 15,300 jobs in February. This increase trailed the 23,900 jobs gained in February 2015, but was slightly above the series average of 14,100 jobs added for the month. Industry employment reached 1,174,500 jobs. Leisure and Hospitality employment rose over the month in 23 areas, led percentage-wise by the San Angelo MSA with a 5.4 percent gain. The Longview MSA followed by posting a 2.3 percent increase in employment. Employment within the MSAs increased by 67,800 jobs over the 13 -month period ending in February 2016 and has continued to post positive annualized growth for 67 consecutive months. Positive annual growth for Leisure and Hospitality was seen in 23 areas, led by the Dallas-Plano-Irving area with an 8.5 percent annual growth rate. The Laredo and the Austin-Round Rock MSAs were tied for second place both posting 7.8 percent growth over the year.
Education and Health Services employment moved up by 9,200 positions in February after a revised decline of 4,100 jobs in the previous month. The monthly increase for February was in-line with the series average increase for the month of 9,100 jobs. Industry employment grew in 18 areas over the month, led by the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSA with 2,500 jobs added over the month. The Odessa MSA led all areas in percentage terms with a 3.7 percent increase. Employment within the MSAs grew by 4.2 percent annually, outpacing the five-year average increase of 2.8 percent for the month. Over the year, 59,500 jobs were added for the period ending February 2016. This upward movement was also reflected in 25 areas over the year, with the College Station-Bryan MSA leading in percentage terms with a 9.3 percent annual growth rate. It was followed by the Sherman-Denison and the Tyler MSAs which posted 6.5 percent and 5.4 percent over the year growth, respectively.
