OCEAN RUNNING CLUB’S 30TH ANNUAL 5K AND HALF-MARATHON-SAVE THE DATE-OCTOBER 21, 2007

Ocean Running Club will host its 30th Annual 5K and Half-Marathon on October 21, 2007, starting and finishing at Jimbo’s on the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. This terrific event needs your help (YES, YOUR HELP) to ensure a successful event. We need as many volunteers as possible and committee heads for the following responsibilities: water stops, registration, finish line, 5K results, course and publicity. If you can help us, please call Pat at 732-831-1016 or e-mail her at .

This year’s race will be even more exciting with the addition of a wide variety of great raffle prizes.(Winners must be present).

AND NOW A WORD (OR TWO)FROM OUR ORC PRESIDENT

As we enter the “dog days” of summer, I am sitting here as proud as a new father as I think about the 2007 Summer Series. Who would have ever thought that we would attract OVER 500 runners in the 5K during these four weeks? That doesn’t include the 100 or so entrants in the 1 mile race. A special thanks to Petra LaMonica for her work as race director this year. Of course, the number of volunteers was phenomenal! Every time I looked around, someone was jumping in to help. Not only were club members helping, but so were spouses, children, and friends. It was an exceptional sight to see. But, then again, what else would anyone expect from the Ocean Running Club?

Two other races that we helped out with were PineBeach and Belmar. If you went to PineBeach, I am sure you saw our tent. Or maybe, should I say heard our tent. I guess we didn’t get the memo on be stodgy. Ah, remember the days when someone would put “horns” on you just as your picture was being taken? Well, members of the club certainly haven’t lost their touch!

At Belmar, registration began at the ungodly hour of 7 A.M. Even with that, our club members got there on time. It didn’t matter that some looked like they still had on their pajamas. After registering everyone who showed up, we rushed to the starting line just to wait 20 minutes for an accident to be cleared up. I am using the rushing and waiting as the excuse for my time. This year’s trip (pardon the pun, Patty), had quite a few club running shirts out there. Several people asked where they could buy them. Sandy Rinderer won 2nd place in her age group. Congratulations, Sandy!

As autumn approaches, so does the 30th Annual Seaside Half –Marathon and 5K Race. This year the event will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007. Once again, Jimbo’s will be the race headquarters. They will also provide a post race breakfast. Suffice it to say, we will need as many volunteers as possible. I have no doubt that if you are there, you will help out somehow.

Don’t forget that we have group runs every Thursday at 6:30 P.M. in WindingRiver and on the first Saturday of each month at 8 A.M. at the Manasquan Reservoir.

I hear nothing but raves about our website. If you haven’t visited it yet, check it out. Our webmaster, Brian Downie, has done a great job.

See you at the finish line, Harold

PLEASE HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE

BY PAULA LYCHOCK

Over the past five years, I have run six marathons with a variety of personal goals as motivation to cover the 26.2 miles. On the weekend of January 6, 2008, however, I will be running WALT DISNEY’S “GOOFY CHALLENGE” with a special goal for inspiration. I will be participating in this race as a member of TEAM NACOA’S – RUN FOR THE CHILDREN(The National Association for Children of Alcoholics). I am taking this opportunity to help raise funds that are needed to support education and advocacy for the 1 in 4 children and their families affected by alcohol or drug abuse in the family.

I am participating in the “Goofy Challenge” with the hope of raising $3,000 for this worthwhile cause. This challenge consists of running a half marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday, January 6, 2008, and a full marathon (26.2 miles) on Sunday, Janurary 7, 2008. Although difficult, I realize that for me there will be a clear and definite finish to this race….an end to the struggle that is inevitable during such a challenging run. On the contrary, this is not always the case for the innocent children who must endure their struggle of uncertain circumstances and outcomes as a result of the parents’ dependencies on drugs and/or alcohol.

I hope t make a difference in the lives of hurting children through my own contribution and by recruiting other special supporters like you. If everyone I ask gives, we can all be a part of the solution. Gifts of

any size will be appreciated and you can be certain it will be put to good use.

Your support will help encourage me through the long months of training and help propel me along the two race courses and inevitably across the finish lines. Please help me make this happen!

PLEASE MAIL YOUR 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION TO NACOA TO: PAULA LYCHOCK, P. O. BOX 397, LAKEHURST, NJ, 08733.

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUMMER SERIES RACE DIRECTOR (AND ORC REPORTER)PETRA LAMONICA

Our 2007 Summer Series concluded on July 30th. And what a series it was! Every week we had a record setting number of runners in attendance. Week 1 there were 105 5K runners, week 2-140 runners, week 3- 161 runners, and week 4- 140 runners. There were about 30 1 milers every week also. It was amazing to see all of those people there. We even had some runners from Arizona, Virginia, and New York.

At the end of every week, I received many e-mails about what a great job I did. If you would like to give me the credit, I’ll take it, but we all know that I had nothing to do with it. (Editor’s note-yes you did, Petra). I could not have done anything without the help of so many people. I want to thank Patty. Without her, I would not have had a clue on where to begin this undertaking. Patrick, Debbie, and Paula marked the course every week. The Lychock family provided the watermelon and the pizza on the last night. Patrick started every race and was at the finish line announcing every finisher. He also announced all of the award winners. Harold worked the clock. Chet and Mark were our lead bikers. The Lesniak family prepared the wet rags and the water at the finish line. Laura, Bob and the McAndrews family handed out water at the turn around. Meg, Barbara, and Patty did registration and results. John provided ice for the ice pops. Barbara Catalano and Dave Gieger handed out our finish place cards. My friend Michelle helped hand out the water at the finish line……. And she isn’t even a club member…YET. Mark Fletcher, our wonderful photographer, was at every race catching all of the special moments. There were young girls who jumped in to hand out the wet rags to the finishers. Brian Downie and Larry Perlberg do a fantastic job preparing our website. We had a family who were vacationing from Virginia that wanted to run in a race. And guess where they found us? On the website! If I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me, but know that we are all very grateful for your help.

I have run many races over the years, just as so many of you have. We register, we run, and we go home. We never really know what is involved in preparing for these races. As you can see from all of the volunteers involved, there is a lot that always needs to be done. So if you ever want to do more than just register, run, and go home, get involved with our club and help out at the races. It is not only a very rewarding experience, it is a lot of fun. The best thing of all is working with such FANTASTIC people. I am so honored to be a part of such a great group.

PINEBEACH 5K RACE COMMITTEE THANKS ORC FOR A JOB WELL DONE!

On behalf of the PineBeach 5K Race Committee, I would once again like to thank the Ocean Running Club for assisting us with registration. We would also like to thank the entire club for all of their help leading up to, during, and after the race. We are truly blessed to have your support with this event.

Thanks again for everything.

Sincerely,

Sally J. Kalksma,

Race Director
