Introduction:

Speakers:
Shirley Malcom, Head of Education and Human Resources Programs, American Association for the Advancement of Science
Randy Olson, Scientist-Turned-Filmmaker
When we talk about the impact of the scientific and other endeavors of our research universities, we tend to tell the story like we're talking to each other. But we leave our audience out of the loop. We need instead to look through the lens of our communities and stakeholders, listen to their stories, and deliver compelling narrative—rather than reports—that speak to the wisdom of our partners. This keynote conversation will explore these issues and provide attendees with actionable ideas for telling their universities' economic engagement story.

Creating Smart Communities: Why Cities and Universities Matter
In an era of national dysfunction cities have taken center stage in tackling global issues. At the same time technological advances are enabling community connectivity like never before. Cities can provide a testbed for applicable research and Universities can be the R&D partner to enable the Smart Cities of the future. We'll explore how cities and universities are partnering together as well as discuss models for expanding local learning nationally.

to Shifting Community Needs
As communities change over time they face a variety of challenges, and in many cases, how universities respond can determine whether change helps or hinders local economic development and growth. This session will explore how universities keep a finger on the pulse of the local community and successfully address evolving needs of stakeholders. Panelists will discuss lessons they’ve absorbed, suggest effective practices, and share what we should all keep in mind as we go back and forth between our “university community” and the community at large.

Room / Making the Modern Workforce:
Defining, Identifying, and Addressing the Skills Gap
The term “skills gap” is controversial, meaning different things to different people. For employers in a particular industry it may represent technical training and is more appropriately addressed by education programs and initiatives outside of 4-year institutions. However, there are other skills gaps linked to success in non-technical career pathways, which should be addressed in Bachelor’s programs, and perhaps other types of credentialing at 4-year institutions. Based on sometimes conflicting viewpoints, how do we as universities identify, define, and address the skills gap through our academic offerings? For this session, a panel of industry experts and academics will tackle this issue and discuss how initiatives they’re involved with are addressing the skills gap.

Room / The Evolution of Tech Transfer
University leaders are increasingly responding to the needs of the innovation economy, and in particular their local economy, by including innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic engagement programming in their strategic planning processes. At the same time, budget and resource threats to the university research enterprises are driving increased pressure on revenue generation from licensing and innovation activities. In response to these changes, CICEP has formed a committee to explore the evolving role and responsibilities of technology transfer offices. During this session committee members will share findings thus far and comment on what they expect tech transfer to look like in the future.

Room / Know, Measure, Tell, and Engage:
How the CICEP Economic Framework Helps Us
Tell Our Economic Engagement Story
CICEP has developed and disseminated the Economic Engagement Framework to help universities plan, implement, assess, and advance economic engagement efforts. We have learned from institutional leaders who have participated in the Innovation and Economic Prosperity Universities program, and also those who have used the framework’s tools in other contexts, that the framework is also a critical jumping off point for developing and telling the university’s economic engagement story. The tools help institutions define what they mean by economic engagement, and what the enterprise looks like—essentially telling their economic engagement stories to themselves. They also help institutions develop key messages for strategic communications and advocacy. This session will feature representatives from several institutions that have incorporated the Economic Engagement Framework into their own campus and community engagement enterprise, and they will report on the results.

Room / Broadening Participation of Women and
Underrepresented Minorities in Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Although today’s women earn more postsecondary degrees than men they still trail their male counterparts in terms of entrepreneurship, and the disparity is even greater among minorities. Universities are ideally situated to help close this gap by broadening participation among faculty, staff, post-doctoral fellows, and students in commercialization and innovation activities. This session will convene entrepreneurs and educators to discuss best practices for empowering women and minorities and for enriching communication mechanisms to inclusively promote entrepreneurship as a career path.

Room / Making the Connection: America’s Economic Concerns and Higher Ed Solutions
This interactive session will focus on improving the effectiveness of how universities focus their messaging efforts when responding to community concerns. Participants will be divided into groups to explore several pivotal economic concerns of American families and develop ways to respond with university solutions. In addition, session participants will receive a detailed document based on group responses two weeks after the session delineating how universities can more effectively communicate to the public and policy makers how higher education is addressing the economic concerns of Americans.
