Foods II Syllabus

Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome to Foods II. Below you will find information about this course, contact info, my grading policy, required materials, a page to be filled out with parent and student information, internet contract and safety contract. I am looking forward to a great semester!

Class Fee $5.00 (Due ASAP)

Course Description: This course focuses on advanced food preparation techniques while applying nutrition, food science, and test kitchen concepts using a new technology. Food safety and sanitation receive special emphasis, with students taking the exam for the ServSafe® credential from the National Restaurant Association. Students develop skills in preparing foods such as yeast breads, and cake fillings and frostings. Students will develop specialty food preparation skills used in food service operations. A real or simulated in-school food business component allows students to apply instructional strategies and workplace readiness skills to an authentic experience to develop a portfolio and to enhance FCCLA activities. Skills in science, math, management, and communication are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include school-based enterprises, field trips, job shadowing, and service learning.

Grading Policy: Students will receive a grade based on the following scale…

Class work, Assignments, Projects, Labs and Tests =75%

***The North Carolina End of Course VoCats test will count as 25% of the student’s Final Semester Grade.

Required Materials: Paper, pencils, pens, dividers, and 1 three ring binder. The three ring binder is to keep all course materials together for binder quizzes, and to study for the NC end of course exam. Students are required to bring these items to class every day. The binder is to be left in the classroom for ease.

Lab Day: Hair is to be pulled back.

Hair net or clean ball cap is to be worn.

Dress code will still be followed

Closed toed shoes.

If a lab is missed due to an absence the student will need to ask for the makeup assignment for the lab.

Late Work: It will be the student’s responsibility to turn in any missed assignments or homework after an absence. Students are also responsible for getting all notes or class work. Missed tests will be made up at the discretion of the teacher.

Classroom Management Plan: Rules, Expectations and Procedure

1. Be promptprepared: Come to class on time with all required materials.

2. Begin the startup activity within 1 minute after the tardy bell.

3. Attend to personal needs (bathroom, locker) before coming to class.

4. Be Polite: Respect yourself, your classmates, and all adults.

5. Practice safety in the food labs at all times.

6. Be Positive and Participate

Levels of Consequences:

 First Offense: The student is given a reminder. The teacher and the student discuss what rule has been broken.

 Second Offense: Parents will be contacted by phone or by letter and after school detention may be assigned.

 Third Offense: Administration will be notified by a written discipline referral. If necessary, a conference will be set up with parents, teacher, administrators and the student to work out a plan to modify the student's behavior.

IV. No phones allowed unless used in instruction. Music is allowed at the teacher’s discretion.

Safety Agreement

Your son/daughter is enrolled in Foods II and will have the opportunity to use cooking appliances, equipment, and utensils as part of course instruction. Appropriate instruction in the safe and proper operation of this equipment is given as part of class instruction. Students will be expected to pass a safety test prior to operating and using this equipment. Although close supervision is maintained at all times, and safety precautions are taken through classroom rules and proper training, the “hands-on” activities in this class present a potential hazard. Therefore, students enrolled in Foods II are required to provide proof of suitable medical insurance, to pass a safety test with a score of 100%, and to sign the Safety Agreement. Parents are also required to sign an Equipment Operation Approval Form prior to their child being allowed to operate and use lab equipment. Please complete, sign, and return this form to school. Your son/daughter WILL NOT be allowed to operate equipment or work in the lab until this form is returned and all requirements have been met.

Rules for Internet Use in Mrs. Leonard’s Family and Consumer Science Classes

Due to the Family and Consumer Science curriculum, it is now necessary for students to access the Internet for specific assignments. We will be using the COW (computer on wheels), Media Center and other CTE classrooms. Computer Labs are now wired so that each computer has access to the internet. Please read the following rules for Internet use in the Family and Consumers Sciences classroom (or in any other room with computers).

1. Students are not to access the Internet unless specifically directed to do so by Mrs. Wilber.

2. Students are to only access sites that apply to the assignment at hand.

3. Students are not to instant message, win pop, or email using the computers at RHS.

4. Internet is not to be used for any personal reason. Its sole purpose is for assignments given in class.

5. Students are not to access any site that violates school rules as stated in the hand book. This would include any site of a violent or sexual nature.

6. Transmission of the following information is prohibited on computers: any material in violation of federal or state regulations including copyrighted or obscene materials, commercial activities, product promotion, political or illegal activities, inappropriate, threatening or abusive language or materials, personal identification information such as the address or phone number of the user or any other individual information or financial information such as credit card or bank account numbers.

I understand that violation of any of the above rules will result in immediate disciplinary action by the school. I understand that by signing this form I am agreeing to the above rules and am promising not to violate them. Refusal by the student or guardian to sign this will result in the student not being allowed to use computers at any time Family and Consumer Sciences while they are connected to the Internet. Assignments missed will have to be completed at home or the student will be given a Zero.
