Powers and key battles during World War II

Open Mapmaker’s Toolkit

Go to Find, Historical Maps

  • Click on “Topic”
  • Choose European History
  • Click “Europe (World War II) 1939
  • Click Display

Click on the Draw tab

Go to Layers

  • Check the “Cities” box
  • Check the “Rivers”
  • and “River Names” box
  • Click Apply

Choose the Border fill tool

  • Select Light Purple and color in the following countries for the Allied Powers
  • United Kingdom
  • France
  • Greece
  • Romania
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Soviet Union
  • Yugoslavia
  • Finland
  • Turkey
  • Albania
  • Syria
  • Lebanon
  • Morocco (Fr)
  • Tunisia
  • Algeria
  • Estonia
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • SelectDarkGreen and color the following for the Axis Powers
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Select Light Green and color the following for the Axis-occupied areas.
  • Poland
  • Norway
  • Netherlands
  • Czech.
  • Austria
  • Denmark
  • Select Yellow and color the following for the Neutral Countries
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • Sweden
  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Ireland
  • Spanish Morocco

Select the Stamp Tool

  • From the stamp drop down menu choose “War”
  • Choose the soldier from the second row
  • Drag the icon to where the Don River and Volga Rivers come closest to each other
  • From the stamp menu choose “markers-pin”
  • Choose the white ‘medium’ pin
  • Drag to the approximate location of the D-day invasion
  • Choose the Tank from the War stamps
  • Drag to the approximate location of the Battle of the Bulge (hint near Belgium… Luxemburg)
  • Choose the small burst from the war stamps
  • Drag to the approximate location of Dunkirk (hint near Belgium along the coast)
  • Choose the medium white star and drag to the location of the Battle of Britain (London)
  • Choose the large burst from the war stamps
  • Drag to Warsaw – Invasion of Poland
  • Choose the Markers – flags (white flag)
  • And drag to Berlin (Germany surrenders)
  • Add 2 more stamps to show other important events of World War II (your choice)

Select the Text Tool

  • Click somewhere on the map
  • Select Box, Transparent
  • Select Background, Transparent
  • Choose size 12, Bold
  • Label with your name, date, and class period on separate lines
  • Drag to lower left
  • Choose size 24, Bold
  • Label the map with World War II Powers
  • Drag under the text box “Europe, 1939”…

Click the Select tool so the titles will not have red boxes around them

Click on Legend

  • Select Build Legend
  • Select Hide Basic Legend
  • Update
  • Highlight a color or icon and Edit Text
  • Label the following color/areas appropriately:
  • Yellow- Neutral Countries
  • Purple- Allied Powers
  • Dark Green- Axis Powers
  • Light Green – Axis Occupied Areas
  • Label the stamps appropriately – it’s your responsibility to read back through and add the right label
  • On line 1 add the battle of event that occurred
  • On line 2 add an important fact about it.
  • Click OK

Go to File, Page Setup

  • Turn Legend On
