Initiated in 2010, and now its eighth edition, Pratibimb, meaning reflection, holds up a mirror to the best of Marathi theatre. With the aim of promoting Marathi Theatre and its understanding, each performance is followed by a discussion with the cast and crew of the play.

It is a satire on the present-day situation though written 40 years ago by Shafaat Khan. In a village, there was heavy rain and whirlwind, and the village was washed away including animals and birds. Two volunteers from two different dogmas arrive in the village to help. The villagers want them to bring crows (Kawale) to perform the rituals of their dead relatives.

Lavani is a traditional dance form of Maharashtra with a rich heritage of several centuries, which involves direct interaction between the artistes and the audience. The performer communicates with the audience through her singing, abhinaya and dance. Although lavani is gaining popularitysince last few years, its portrayal in popular media is limited to being just an item number. Sangeet Bari combines multiple narratives such as the lavani woman, the musicians, the customer and the researcher/narrator. It also includes live performances of old traditional lavanis, which are either unknown or forgotten.

Hey Ram represents the Bohada festival held in Nashik during the festival of Ramnavami. The new generation wants to move on from the village tradition of playing mukhas. Mukhas are the big faces of gods and evils, which the villagers wear and dance throughout the night. One day the media comes to the village to know about the festival.

Party (1976) delves into the lives of the characters attending the party. There is a purpose behind hosting and attending the party for everyone. Damayanti, the host, invites the National award-winning playwright, Barve; Mohini, an actress; popular theatre playwright Agashe and young playwright, Bharat; close friends Doctor and communist Vrinda. Imperative to the plot is Amrit, who chose to remain away from the party, opting to fight for the marginalised tribals. His whereabouts are revealed to them by journalist Jogdand. The incomplete, hollow and pretentious lives of these culture vultures and city sophisticates are unveiled when the party goes haywire.

The play commences with the meeting of a young female playwright with a commercially successful director for the script reading of her new play. The director calls the audience representative onstage and the real drama begins. The director mentions the importance of the audience presence for the script reading and tells the young playwright to amend the script as per the responses of the audience. As the young playwright starts reading the play, the play within the play begins.

Harshada mysteriously disappeared 20 years ago on the eve of her uncleSadanandKelkar’sbirthday. Sadanand and Harshada shared a very close bond and she would gift him a frame every year on his birthday. However, after her disappearance, the frame continues to be sent. Kelkar suspects that one of the family members has killed Harshada and is sending these frames in order to remind him of the killing. Twenty years later, these frames suddenly stop arriving thus giving Kelkar a reason to reopen the case.

Prof. R. D. Karve (1882-1953) has been an extremely important personality in Maharashtra in the last century. He has done truly fundamental work in the field of birth control in India. Despite great difficulties, he ran Samajswasthya, the magazine that propagated mental and physical health, for 27 years. Samajswasthya carried well-researched articles about theatre, films, painting and culinary arts as well as social and political issues. It would also publish writing that proclaimed sexual freedom. It became the cause of controversy on several occasions since it published pictures containing nudity and writing that questioned the old concepts of sexuality. While Karve’s work in the field of birth control gained wide social acceptance over time, his struggles have been largely ignored.
