TELEPHONE TECHNICIAN INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

  1. Someone from ______Jr. High calls to complain of static and phone line cutting in and out. Take us through the troubleshooting steps you would follow. (Look for: determine if the problem is on caller’s phone or other phones in the building. If just callers phone have them plug/unplug phone. Make sure phone lines are securely plugged in. Change line cords/handsets and phone set. Test drop.)
  1. How would you handle a building’s voice mail being reported out of service? What would you do if you had several phones calls regarding phones going out over five buildings?
  1. Someone calls to say they hear an echo on their phone-- sometimes. How would you troubleshoot this?
  1. When would you call SBC or other support?
  1. Under what conditions do you work best? (Look for: tolerance for stress)
  1. This position may require travel out of town for training or other situations. Are you able to attend training of this nature?
  1. How do you feel about learning some of the aspects of our system withoutformal classes? (look for ability to learn on their own, not shy about learning areas they are not familiar in, show them how to do it once or twice then they've "got it", etc.)
  1. How do you want others to think of you? (someone who is liked- not if they don’t like me tough)
  1. You are called repeatedly for service by the same person who is becoming more rude and insistent that you fix their problem. After repeated attempts by you to solve it, you discover it is a user error. What would you do? (Look for: some need more support than others)
  1. How would you troubleshoot several buildings being without a phone system at the same time?
  1. You receive a call from ------Junior High principal, the media technical assistant from school and a teacher from ------telling you, 1) the principal’s phone is going in and out, 2) the media tech needs to know where she can get a handset for a broken phone in the counseling department, 3) the teacher preparing for a video-conference field trip and the phone won’t connect. What would you do?

  1. What are the highest pressure situations you have been under in recent years? Tell us about them.
  1. How do you deal with someone who is complaining about your service? (Look for: correct the problem and get on with the next problem)
  1. How would you go about explaining a process to someone, (in person or on the phone), when he/she is having a difficult time understanding your direction? (Look for: say it several ways, follow up with questions, maybe come out and sit w/ them)
