Methamphetamine Suicide Prevention Initiative

The Indian Health Services has awarded funding to 129 Federal, Tribal, and urban programs that demonstrated innovative and promising practices in confronting the methamphetamine and suicide crisis in Indian Country today. The submitted project proposals were evaluated on seven principals based on nationally constructed guidelines, congressional intent, ability to meet program requirements and ability to collect and report on all applicable outcome measures.

The Seven Guiding Principles

All of the pilot programs funded through MSPI develop models and programs that will:

  • Coordinate community services respond to their local methamphetamine and /or suicide crisis
  • Participate in a nationally-coordinated program focusing on increasing access to prevention / treatment services
  • Provide community-focused responses that enhance evidence based or practice based methamphetamine and /or suicide prevention or treatment services or education programming
  • Provide communities with needed resources to develop their own community focused programs
  • Establish baseline data information in the local communities
  • Document the level of need for the community; and
  • Be scaled at a level that will ensure a measureable impact

The Gail of the Initiative is to promote the development of successful evidence based and practiced based models of prevention, treatment, and aftercare that Native American / Alaskan Native communities can localize and implement.

MSPI Web-Portal

The MSPI web portal is a social networking web portal that allows funding recipient’s and grantees programs and colleagues connect virtually to assist in overcoming obstacles and challenges within each of their respected prevention programs. A web portal presents information from diverse sources in a unified way, coordinates messaging from Indian Health Services (I.H.S.) Headquarters and JBS International, streamlines reporting procedures, coordinates communication with efficiency, supports rapid information dissemination and creates feedback loops for real-time communication.
