TITLE:PAYROLL OFFICER
REPORTING TO:Assistant Director (Finance & Administration)
SALARY SCALEGrade SC5/6, pts 22-28 on NJC scale (23,149- £27,277 including ILW) pro rata
HOURS:14 hours per week
including occasional evening and weekend work for which time off in lieu is granted
HOLIDAYS:26 days pa pro rata, plus 8 Statutory days plus and additional 3 days pro rata during Christmas when our offices are closed
Background
VAL provides a payroll service to community and voluntary sector organisations who deliver a range of services in the community.
Main Purpose of Job
This role will support organisationsusing the service with calculations for staff salaries, payslips for each staff member and provide up to date information on tax and salary issues.
The role will also include delivery of the new HM Revenue and customs requirements on behalf of organisations in the payroll service.The Payroll Officer will work as part of the VAL staff team and closely with the Assistant Director Finance & Administration, deputising VAL payroll in their absence.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and develop a Payroll Service for the Voluntary Sector
- To provide a high quality and reliable payroll service for voluntary sector clients as well as new clients from other sectors
- To provide advice and support to groups using the payroll service
- To deal with all aspects of payroll queries from both organisations and the Tax office
- To run VAL’s payroll in the absence of the Assistant Director (Finance & Admin)
Admin Support
- To cover for the Administrative Officer in their absence
- To ensure the office environment is tidy
- To be self servicing with regard to own admin
Other
- To attend staff meetings and other VAL meetings and events, as appropriate.
- To attend training as agreed with, or determined by, the Assistant Director (Finance & Administration).

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience
- Experience of voluntary or paid work in the Voluntary Sector
- Experience of running a payroll service
- Experience of or willingness to learn QuickBooks Accounting Packages

- An understanding of and ability to implement a payroll service
- An ability to use financial software packages
- A thorough knowledge of payroll provision
- Good communication skills
- Good typing and word processing skills
