ALGEBRA 1B

Course Description

Upon completion of the Algebra 1B course, students will master several of the concepts and skills addressed by the Common Core State of California Mathematics Frameworks standards for first-year Algebra. Students will acquire an understanding of the symbolic language of Algebra. The unitscovered in this course are Polynomials, Factoring, Quadratics, Rational Expressions, Radical Expressions and Data Analysis. The Algebra 1AB course will help prepare students for the Common Core Standardized Tests, PSAT, and SAT exams. Students will work together cooperatively to communicate mathematics orally, interpret solutions graphically, use technology, and solve problems in written form. Students will also use technology to solve many mathematical theories, applications and concepts. This course makes substantial academic demands on students, homework will be assigned daily. A minimum of 30 to 45 minutes is required to complete daily homework assignment.

Materials Needed

Students will need to notebook paper (college or wide ruled) or a spiral notebook, graph paper, pencils and erasers to complete assignments. Additional materials may be provided.

The ALGEBRA CLASS…

The instructor will review previous homework assignments. Students are expected to be prepared to review previous homework assignments for understanding and mastery. Students are expected to take accurate lecture notes and complete the classwork assignment in class. Be prepared to complete the homework assignment at home.

Classwork and Homework

Classwork and Homework each worth 2.5 points will be assigned and graded. Students will be penalized for late assignments If any assignment is incomplete or not turned in, students will receive a zero or no credit. Assignments are posted and provided to each student online. Group and individual projects will be assigned throughout the semester. Homework will be checked daily.

Grades

Grades are determined by the average of assignments, quizzes and unit tests. Your cumulative points will be calculated and averaged so that the percentage will determine your grade. Your points or scores and percentages will be posted on schoolloop and maintained in a rollbook.

Grading Scale

The following grading scale will determine your course grade:

B / 87% - 76%
C / 75% - 66%
D / 65% - 50%
F / 49% - 0%

Tests and Quizzes

Section quizzes and unit tests will be given. If a student is absent, he/she will have an opportunity to make-up the quiz grade by replacing the missing exam grade or with the grade received on the next quiz. If a student is absent from a unit test, he/she will have an opportunity to make up the test upon his/her return from an absence. Each quiz is worth 50 points and each unit test is worth 100 points. A Final Exam will be given at the end of the semester.

Classroom Etiquette

Students are expected to maintain a positive learning environment in which he/she will respect the Teacher and students in the classroom. During the lectures and when someone is speaking each student should refrain from talking so that each person is given the common courtesy he/she deserves. Your education is important and it is necessary that each student follow the district, school, and classroom rules. If a student is unable to follow these rules he/she will be dismissed from the class and subject to disciplinary actions such as a suspension from class.

Classroom Rules and Guidelines:

Students are expected to be on time and prepared for class with his/her materials

If you are more than 10 minutes late you need a Tardy Excuse from the attendance office

Students are responsible for any/all missing assignments and exams ; find a study-buddy to assist you with keeping track of what you are missing ( lecture notes, homework, exams, etc.)
Restroom passes or opportunities are limited … don’t abuse the privilege.

Students may not leave the classroom 15 minutes after or prior to the passing period bell

Students must follow the school dress code – hats will be confiscated if worn in class and students who are inappropriately dressed will be sent to the Counselor or Dean’s Office
No classroom disruptions are permitted in the learning environment; no excessive talking, loud noises, confrontations, arguments or fighting allowed and please refrain from using profanity
No disruptions when the teacher is speaking or teaching that’s when you enter the

NO TALKING ZONE!

Students who are disruptive or engaging in unacceptable behavior will be dismissed from the class. A phone call to the parent(s) will be made immediately or by the end of the school day and/or the student will be sent to the Counselor or Dean’s Office
NO ELECTRONIC DEVICESALLOWED IN THE CLASS including but not limited to cell phones, or MP3 players. They will be CONFISCATED and sent to the Dean’s Office or kept until the end of the school day.
