UK, EEA & SWISS NATIONALS / WHERE ONE OR BOTH PARTIES TO THE MARRIAGE ARE SUBJECT TO IMMIGRATION CONTROL
  • 29 days notice period
  • Fee of £35 per person
  • Each party must be able to demonstrate a minimum period of 9 full days residency within Tower Hamlets

  • Fee of £47 per person
  • Both parties must produce a photograph which must be of UK passport quality and size
  • Couples must attend in person together at the Register Office for the purpose of placing their notices of marriage or civil partnership
  • Each party must be able to demonstrate a minimum period of 9 full days residence within a registration district of England or Wales

All parties placing notice of marriage must provide the following:

  • A VALID PASSPORT
  • TWO PROOFS OF ADDRESS FOR EACH PERSON,one of which must be from the following list:
  • A council tax statement dated within the last three months.
  • A utility bill dated within the last three months (not a mobile or landline telephone bill).
  • A bank statement dated within one month of the date of notice.
  • A valid UK driving licence.
  • A mortgage statement dated within the last year.

All documents must be current. Photocopied documents, scanned documents and online statements can not be accepted.

If applicable, you must also provide the following documents:

  • Change of name documents, for example Deed Poll, statutory declaration, etc.
  • If you have been through any form of marriage or civil partnership previously in this or any other country, then you will need to provide evidence of how that marriage or civil partnership ended i.e. Decree Absolute, death certificate, marriage certificate, dissolution document. All documents must be original and have an English translation where appropriate.
  • Please note that if your previous marriage or civil partnership was not dissolved through a court in the United Kingdom, then the registration officer may have to refer your case to the team of experts at the General Register Office. If you have booked a date for your marriage or civil partnership, then this date is purely provisional and may need to be changed.
  • Consent is required for anyone under 18 years of age. (forms are available from this office).
  • An interpreter should attend with parties if required. Your interpreter is required to provide current proof of identification and MUST be over the age of 18.

Absence of the correct documents will mean that notice cannot be taken.

Notices are to be given in the district in which you live.

The Register Office is closed between 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) and 11.30 am to 2.00 pm (Wednesday).
