Geography Department Information

The successful candidate will lead the continued development of a high-achieving and forward-thinking department. They will be a passionate, dynamic and creative individual, able to foster high standards of teaching and learning.

The successful candidate will join one other full-time member and two part-time members of the department and will be expected to teach Geography from Key Stage 3 through to A Level.

The Geography Department is situated on the ground floor of the Old Hereward building. There are 2 dedicated teaching rooms and a department office/resources room. Each teaching room has at least one networked computer and an overhead projector/interactive whiteboard. There is also a dedicated Geography teaching room in the Year 7 and 8 block. The department has its own set of iPads and makes use of a wide variety of technologies including ArcGIS, Digimaps and Twitter.

We have a full programme of fieldwork activities, ranging from local to overseas trips to locations such as Iceland and China. The department has a thriving enrichment programme and is actively involved in the wider geography community. All pupils study Geography to the end of Year 9. Geography is one of the most popular optional GCSE courses with 51 pupils in the current Year 11. The OCR B specification is followed at GCSE. At A Level, the Edexcel specification is followed. Each year several of our pupils go on to study Geography and related subjects at university.

Head of Geography job description:

•Develop and lead the Geography Department in King’s Ely Senior.

•Responsible for Geography teachers, supporting their work as subject teachers and making sure that all members of the Geography Department participate effectively.

•Encourage, manage and support the professional development of staff within the Geography Department.

•Encourage consultation and discussion within the Geography Department.

•Responsible for the academic progress of pupils studying Geography.

•Communicate effectively with parents and guardians.

•Liase with subject leaders in King’s Ely International and King’s Ely Junior.

Geography Teacher job description:

•Excellent, dynamic and creative teacher, with a high level of subject knowledge and skills;

•Determination to enhance, deliver and promote the teaching of their subject;

•Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation, which leads to the teaching of challenging and differentiated lessons in the classroom;

•Produce high quality preparation and delivery of lessons to stimulate and encourage pupils’ learning;

•Set and mark prep (homework) in line with school and department policies;

•Undertake regular reviews of pupils’ academic progress and acknowledge student success;

•Keep good records of pupil achievement and progression;

•Set targets to improve the quality of learning and complete regular reports for pupils according to the school calendar;

•Establish good professional relationships with staff, learners and parents;

•Liaise with pupils and parents at Parents Evenings throughout the school year;

  • Endeavour to provide extra-curricular learning opportunities and trips when required;

•Set and mark internal examinations and the writing of schemes of work;

•Keep up to date with developments in Geography and recent curriculum initiatives;

•Work with the wider Geography community to promote the subject and share good practice.

Remuneration:

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience of the appointee. All staff receive private medical insurance. Staff of King’s Ely are able to educate their children at the school at 50% of the full day fee.
