Background to Daniel 2
•The Babylonian empire invaded the land of Judah and carried 10,000 captives from Jerusalem to Babylon
–Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were among those transported to a new land as teenagers
•Nabopolassar was king of Babylon
•When he died, his son Nebuchadnezzar assumed the rule of the Babylonian empire
•The time of this chapter was 604 – 602 BC
Daniel 2:2-13 – The Wise Men of Babylon
•Magicians
–Babylonian scholars
•Conjurers
–Those who communicated with the dead
•Sorcerers
–Those who practice incantations
•Chaldeans
–Astrologers
Daniel 2:14-19 – Daniel’s Plight
•Daniel is a man of action
•Daniel is a man of courage
–Going before the king uninvited could have resulted in his immediate death
•Daniel is a man of prayer
–He didn’t call a committee meeting to decide what to do
–He held a prayer vigil!
Daniel 2:20-23 – Daniel’s Worship
•“Blessed” = praise or worship
–As Daniel faced possible death, he spent time before God in praise
–To worship is to declare the worth of God
Daniel 2:24-45 – Daniel Tells the Dream and Interprets it
There are five kingdoms represented:
Head of gold = Babylonian empire
Torso of sliver = Medo-Persian empire
Thighs of bronze = Greek empire
Legs of iron = Romanempire
Stone that crushed = Kingdom of God
What does this mean for me?
•When faced with the hard times of life, make time to be alone with God and to seek Him with all your heart, soul, mind & strength
•When God is leading you, do not be afraid of what lies ahead
–You can trust God to guide you, even when the direction may seem hopeless, helpless, and desperate
•Decide today to worship God who is sovereign over all
–Submit to His leading
–Believe in His Son who came to give His life as the payment for the sin of all who would believe in Him
–Trust Him with your life now and eternally
