Free Training and Technical Assistance Opportunities

  • Fall Conference Update

Planning continues apace for the Oregon 21st CCLC Statewide Workshop, which will be held November 20 and 21 at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR. We’ve invited back staff from AIR and KIT to lead us through deeper conversations aroundBeyond the Bell(please complete AIR’s session-planning survey if you haven’t already) and inclusion. Registration details will be shared soon in a separate communication from ODE.Conference attendance is required for project directors, site coordinators, and more than one site-staff member.

  • Recordings of August 29 ODE Startup Webinars Available Online

Thanks to all grantee staff who participated in the ODE startup webinars on Program nuts bolts and the new Year-End Report on Friday, August 29. If you missed the webinars, or if you’d like to review what was discussed, recordings of the session are available online at

  • Save the Date: On-Line Discussion November 5 on Working with Adolescent Students in OR 21st CCLC

On Wednesday, November 5at 11:00 am Education Northwest will facilitate an online learning session specifically for 21st CCLC programs working with middle and high school students. This interactive discussion is a chance for programs across the state to share promising practices and lessons learned on key topics of interest identified by grantees at the spring conference. Check your inboxes later this week for an invitation to participate in a survey to help plan the discussion.

  • Free Family Engagement Webinar September 24

In this webinar, U.S. Department of Education staff will discuss the development and implementation of the Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships(PDF), and practitioners and staff will also share strategies and resources for engaging families in supporting positive student outcomes. The webinar will take place from 11 am to noon Pacific on Wednesday, September 24, and advance registration is required.

  • Free Trainings on Volunteer Screening in Beaverton (Oct. 1) and Ashland (Oct. 8)

Oregon Mentors invites staff members from youth-serving organizations to attend a free, comprehensive training opportunity to strengthen volunteer screening practices to protect child safety. It will be offered in Beaverton on Wednesday, October 1 and in Ashland on Wednesday, October 8 (locations TBD). The free, day-long (9 am to 4 pm) training will explore the tools programs possess to decide if a volunteer should be allowed to work with children. Lunch will be provided.   • Reminder: Oregon 21st CCLC LINK Resource Collections Now Available

Visit the Oregon 21st Century LINK technical assistance collections as you get your program up and running this fall. Readings and resources are available on STEM/STEAM, ELL, Professional Development, Continuous Program Improvement, and Sustainability. We welcome your feedback and suggestions; take a look and let us know what you think!

  • Free Onsite and Remote Technical Assistance from Education Northwest

Have a question or problem of planning or practice you’d like some assistance with? Education Northwest staff members are available to meet with you and your 21st CCLC team in person or over the phone to help troubleshoot issues, connect you with resources, and identify opportunities for growth. New Research and Resources

  • Resource for Rural Youth Development

The federal Rural Youth Development program supports the work of 4-H, Future Farmers of America, and Girl Scouts of the USA to expand youth development programs in rural areas. This collaboration, begun in 2002, has yielded resources that are available for use by other rural youth programs, including toolkits for designing projects and evaluations that are youth-driven. The website for the program also provides links to each organization’s respective rural youth development initiatives and/or curricula.

  • School Improvement Coaches’ Resource: Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts

The Oregon School Improvement Network recently made available resources, including videos, for helping school improvement coaches work with teachers to understand the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts. The resources can help afterschool programs understand the impact of the CCSS’ on classroom instruction and help them identify activities that can support and extend English Language Arts learning afterschool.

  • MiddleWeb: All About the Middle Grades

This blog for educators and others interested in the success of young adolescents in grades 4 through 8 features resource collections, book reviews, guest articles, and interviews with middle-grades experts, as well as a thrice-weekly e-newsletter. Of particular interest are examinations of the challenges of parent engagement in middle school, grit/perseverance, and family and community outreach.

Funding Opportunities

  • Lemelson-MIT JVInvenTeams Application Now Open; Apply by Oct. 31

The online application for the Lemelson-MIT JVInvenTeams program is now open. As was previewed at the Spring Conference, the program is designed for students in the 9th and 10th grades to hone their hands-on skills and enrich their STEM education through invention-based design activities. The initiative includes engaging content with activities guides for 20 students and their educators, consumable materials for activities, tee shirts, tools, and a capstone event to be held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in May of 2015. Up to five Oregon 21st CCLC grantees with 9th and 10th graders will be selected to host a JV InventTeam, and (half-day) training sessions for successful applicants will be included in the required November 21 Statewide Workshop in Eugene.   • Whole Kids Foundation 2015 School Garden Grant, Deadline October 31

Created in partnership with FoodCorps, the School Garden Grant program provides a $2,000 monetary grant to a K-12 school, or a non-profit working in partnership with a K-12 school, to support a new or existing edible garden on school grounds. See the Foundation’s website for more information and an online application form.

  • Grants for Playground Equipment; Applications Due October 9

KaBOOM! and the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play Initiative have grants available for communities to build playgrounds in their neighborhoods. Winners of the Let’s Play Community Construction Grant will receive $15,000 for playground equipment. The application is due October 9, and can be accessed online.

A conference for afterschool practitioners that draws regional and national speakers. Register online.

  • 2014 Oregon Afterschool Conference November 8 at Chemeketa Community College. Registration for this annual convening of afterschool programs in Oregon is open on the OregonASKwebsite.
  • National Conference on Summer Learning November 17-19

The National Summer Learning Association’s annual conference will be held November 17-19 in San Antonio, TX. The focus of the conference will be on how community partnerships support summer learning, and the speakers will include Representative Mike Villarreal of Texas.Register online.
