SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS

The following is a brief summary of the new and revised paragraphs in the Standard for Hydromassage Bathtubs, UL 1795, which have a future Effective Date of February 1, 2006 and the action that may be required to determine compliance.

With the exception of paragraphs 59.16 and 59.17, all new and revised requirements would only be applicable to hydromassage bathtubs with heaters. Some apply only to units intended for heaters installed after the bathtub leaves the factory. Some (heater related) tests have been added to simulate additional anticipated abnormal operation situations.

59.16 is an existing marking requirement that indicates the factory installed components of the bathtub. The content has not changed, it will now be required to be a permanent marking provided on the bathtub.

Paragraph 59.17 is a new marking applicable to all hydromassage bathtubs.

Paragraphs / General Subject and Comment
22B.5 / Only applicable to field-installed heaters. Added to interim requirements used prior to issuing the revised pages to UL 1795. A heater intended for field installation shall be provided with a length of 8 AWG (8.4mm2) solid copper conductor to connect to the bathtub equipotential bonding terminal.
23.1 / Additional heater abnormal operation tests have been added, simulating blocked suction fittings and blocked jets if the jets are adjustable.
23.4 / Heaters that utilize pressure or vacuum switches for low-water or no-water protection will need to be reviewed. Some switches evaluated to UL 508 will no longer be acceptable as they do not meet the requirements for limit controls in either UL 353 or UL 873.
45.2.1 / Change in the starting temperature of the water in the tub during the normal operation water temperature test.
45.3.1.1, 45.3.2.1, 45.3.3.1, 45.3.6.1 and 45.3.7.1 / Normal and abnormal operation tests have been clearly separated. Only Blocked Suction Fitting (45.3.6) and Blocked Jet (45.3.7) are new. Methods for the other abnormal operation tests are unchanged.
59.16 / Each bathtub will now be required to be permanently marked to indicate the factory-installed components.
59.17 / Applicable to all bathtubs. If not intended for a field-installed heater option, shall be plainly and permanently marked “Not Suitable for Field-Installed Heater”. Shall be visible through the intended plumbing access.
