A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. ROBERT K. CARLEY FOR HIS LONG AND OUTSTANDING CAREER AS PROFESSOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE AT NEWBERRY COLLEGE AND TO WISH HIM HEALTH AND HAPPINESS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

Whereas, Dr. Robert K. Carley, Professor of Political Science, began his illustrious career at Newberry College in 1969, after earning his Ph.D. from Indiana University; and

Whereas, Dr. Carley has influenced and educated generations of students at Newberry College for the past thirtythree years; and

Whereas, through his energetic leadership and vision he has inspired hundreds of students to live a life of public service in their communities, in South Carolina, throughout the United States, and around the world; and

Whereas, Dr. Carley’s skill and initiative is responsible for many important events at Newberry College, including hosting of the nationally televised debate between the Republican candidates for President during the 2000 election that brought many distinguished visitors to the Newberry campus one particular candidate will long be remembered President George W. Bush; and

Whereas, Dr. Carley’s sure guidance and leadership to Newberry College students in political science has prepared them for a multitude of careers and for graduate school in a variety of fields including law, journalism, education, and commerce; today some of his former students are employed throughout a wide range of government positions as diverse as resource management, urban planning, fiscal policy, foreign service, housing, and education planning; and

Whereas, Dr. Robert Carley will retire from Newberry College on May 5, 2002, as Professor Emeritus after thirtythree wonderful years of dedicated and faithful service, and he will be greatly missed by the many students, faculty, and alumni of Newberry College. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Dr. Robert K. Carley for his long and outstanding career as Professor of Political Science at Newberry College and wish him health and happiness for many years to come on the occasion of his retirement.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Robert K. Carley.
