Our next meeting is Sunday, May 1, 2011 (lunch at 2 PM, lecture at 3 PM)
Subject: The ABC’s of Tomb Painting
Speaker: Dr. Betsy Bryan will lecture on the “ABCs of Tomb Painting.” Dr. Bryan is the Alexander Badawy Professor of Egyptian Art and Archaeology in the Near Eastern Studies Department at Johns Hopkins University. Tombs were houses for eternity to the ancient Egyptians who frequently lavished resources on preparing their final resting places. While their burials may have been in deep darkened shafts, above them they constructed funerary chapels where their friends and family could visit them on holidays and leave funerary offerings to ensure their afterlife sustenance. The walls of these tomb chapels were covered with paintings that memorialized their lives and suggested their proper burial and immortality. These paintings have been the subject of many hundreds of scholarly discussions over the past century; but the people who did the paintings and--indeed the art of painting itself---has received far less attention. As part of a larger study of the techniques and organization of painters, the lecturer discovered a group of texts that provide a vocabulary for the materials and methods of tomb painting. This material will be presented along with images that illustrate the techniques, both in process and as finished art works.
