Take Apart Day - Monday, May5th

Name:

q  Students should wear comfortable older clothing to class. Clothes may get dirty depending on what is taken apart.

q  Students will need to wear safety goggles during this activity. I will provide them with goggles or they may bring their own.

q  Students need to bring in any items they have for “take apart” between now and May 5th.

q  Parents may drop off items to take apart and tools in the Pennell office. Make sure to label items “for seminar” or “Kravatz”. Take apart items will not be returned. Tools will be returned. Students may bring more than one item to work on. Televisions, computer monitors, and items holding a charge are not safe for take apart. Some items that have been taken apart in the past are: VCRs, DVD players, radio/CD/tape players, telephones, vacuum cleaners, computers, doorbells, scales, power tools, curling irons, sewing machines, toasters, and toys.

q  Students will need to bring in tools. Please mark them so they can be returned to the proper owner. No hammers, please. Tools typically used are: various sized Phillips and straight screw drivers, wire cutters, and pliers. Look at what you have to take apart to determine what will be needed. (Screwdrivers are not one size fits all.)

q  Students without tools or items to take apart will share with other students or use classroom supplies. I have some items for take apart. I have assorted tools, not a class set.

q  Students have had success in the past finding take apart items in their neighborhood on trash day.

q  It is my hope that from what is taken apart students can extract small motors, worm gears, and the like. Students will also see how items are put together. They will learn the importance of different sized screwdrivers. Students will observe critically and note circuit boards, resistors, capacitors, fuses, LED lights, gears, belts, springs, and “simple machines”.

q  Extra parent help is welcome during this activity.
