Differences I see between audio and written. INDUCTIVE ARGUMENT, ~deductive.
In print: logos is kind (ethos/pathos are attendants, princes)
In audio: Ethos and Pathos are kings (logos is the attendant)
Micro level: diction, sentence length, signposting, phrasing, repetition, syntax, integration of sources
Simpler words, sentences are smaller and given simpler syntax. Nothing is out of place
Lots of signposting – making signposting super clear and following the structure of research
Repeats the important themes, sources are quotes with another tone of voice.
Macro level: structure, evidence, major rhetorical appeals, exposition (analytical writing, explaining telling) show don’t tell or show in addition to telling, dramatization
Music:
Creates a certain feeling/mood
Cognitive breaths, paragraph markers. Indicate a new thought/section
Anchors us.
He tries to convey meaning with voice alone – that by itself can carry meaning.
Ethos
Pathos – drawing on assumptions of the audience
enthymeme – a syllogism in which one of the premises or the conclusion is not stated explicitly
logos – must be an inference, not just logical facts. If__, then ___.
Makes a whole story out of the introduction, wedding ring story expanded – make it sound like the beginning to a silly PI story
The joking usage of Columbia instead of America – This Columbian Life
More deliberate signposting of what’s to come – like a discussed list.
More informal, addresses the audience in the second person.
Irony, humor – Jews, Arabs, etc.
We instead of one (we still, instead of one still)
Simplified syntax
Skips much of the background information – porn music
Makes the penthouse commentary more
Capture interest and structure following the research process – summarize the content to be gleaned from the passages instead of presenting the information
the hard name is repeated for easier comprehension – follows the structure of a story, not the structure of an expository essay
repeating yourself is alright. Don’t look for variety.
Amerigo and printers are conflated in the audio, in the written they’re kept distinct.
Shows everything and then allows the obvious connect – another way of looking a it, but what it is is clearly shown.
