Introduction:

Pre-alignment inspection is necessary for many reasons. Vehicles just don’t get out of “alignment” for no apparent reason. Usually when a vehicle pulls hard during driving, or seems to be wearing the tire angle poorly it’s most likely due to something worn out in the steering or suspension of the unit. This job sheet will cover the most common wear items as well as ride or curb height.

Tire Pressure:

Tire pressure should be checked as any difference in all four tires will affect ride height and handling, record your measurements below

Ball Joints Should be inspected for wear by unloading them. Jack the vehicle up by placing the jack directly under the lower control arm as shown (Need floor jack /pry bar)

Wheel Bearing:

Wheel bearings that are too loose can affect camber and toe angles, wheels should be jacked up and checked by placing your hands at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions as shown

Tie rod ends:

Tie rod ends should be checked for looseness as they can affect the toe end of the alignment and cause a hard pull and shoulder wear on the tire. They can be checked by jacking the tire off the ground and placing the hands at the 3 and 9 position with slight movement as shown. Also they can be checked by grasping the tie rod end and attempting to move it up and down

Ride Height (curb height):

Ride Height should be checked as it will affect alignment angles. Vehicles which have been lowered or lifted from their factory height must have an “altered alignment” performed. Every manufacture suggest different methods for checking ride height so refer back to the service information for the proper method .
