The Cape and Islands Orchid Society

Newsletter - January 2011 - HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Next meeting: Sunday January 9, 2011 at 1:30 PM at

the ADMINISTRATION BUILDING OF THE BARNSTABLE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS

1220 Nathan Ellis Hwy, (Rt. 151) East Falmouth MA 02536 (White fences on North side of Hwy.)

For January, CAIOS is planning A Two RING CIRCUS Workshop. Last years culture and repotting workshop was too confusing with three tables of experts, so this year the tables will include:

1. An orchid culture table featuring “THE OrchidDOCTOR IS IN”, will look at any plant a member wants growing advice on. Bring in your non-bloomers or sickies for a free examination. Any plant or plants can be brought in for the Orchid Doctors to examine and may get repotted as part of the free consultation. We’ll even be ready to kill a few bugs if found. No question will be too trivial or too profound, we will do our best to answer/look up or help. Some demo material will be there if needed(Yr. Ed has plenty of non-bloomers to peruse). Preparation for show will also be included at this table using examples brought in by members for the Show & Tell.

2. A table for computer and general judging plant registration with hands-on OrchidWIZ, Wildcatt and AQ+ all set up for anyone to run with coaches standing by. Plant show prep may migrate here if the other table is too busy.

Show table plants welcome and the Show and Tell will be held as usual(Wrap your plants for freeze if ‘tis cold!). Would Members A – L and/or any other gastronomically inclined folk please bring in some tasty treats. A modest raffle will be held and books will be available from the library. And see below about Dr. Ovid Slavin’s books.

The Ovid Slavin Book collection: Ovid has for years sponsored trophies and he wished to perpetuate them as much as possible by willing his books and artwork for CAIOSto sell. After his passing, Yr Ed spoke at his service at the Temple in NH, honoring his past founding of CAIOS. Afterwards I brought his books back and will present them on a table at the meeting. The plan is to let members look and buy, the $$ going to an account for his trophies. It’s hard to put an exact price on these, so, bargain with me, TGregg, after you look at them. Free recent Orchids magazines! Some of the best:
