Discussion
/ Actions / Follow upEducation Approval Committee / Kathy provided structure and process for this new committee and shared handouts. General feedback is supportive. Will need to advertise option to nurses and promote appropriate use of this change. Currently no specific budget allotted but senior leadership support to move forward which will also help with budget planning for next FY. / PDC approves. Kathy Guy will notify all when final approval from Nurse Directors. / Kathy Guy, Nov 2012
Nursing Education Dept / Centralizing an education calendar / Tabled until November / Nov 2012
Med Surg Certification / Deb sent out request to recently med surg nurses about best study guide and idea options and has forwarded response to Connie Brown who is ordering some books for med surg units at Penrose. AMSA book seems popular choice – user friendly, easy to read and review. Purchasing questions to answer is costly for each individual. Last time we financially supported nurses to attend a Med Surg prep course in Denver only a few went. The next time it was offered in Denver , we offered the same financial support with only one nurse registering. Is the issue nurses don’t want to take a two day class? Or drive the hour to Denver? Or not yet ready to commit to certification? Or something else. Hopefully the survey Pat Moyers is doing with med surg nurses will yield some ideas for action.
Nov 1-7 - Med Surg Nurses Week – how can we use this to champion med surg nursing? Timeframe is short!
· Can TLC be about med surg nurses – highlight certified med surg nurses? Can do in Dec or when it is planned for. Nov is full.
· Get stories from nurses who choose to be and stay in med surg
· Interview physicians on value of med surg nurses and publicize
· Pulse – how many our med surg nurses? Photos?
· Managers – ice cream cart / Deb Nussdorfer work on Pulse project with Marketing.
Kathy Guy will talk with managers of med surg units celebrating med surg nurses week. / Now and Nov meeting
BSN / UCCS has a dual enrollment program – credits from community college work apply toward BSN. Reduces cost and time to earn AD to BSN. Is this only full time? UCCS also transfers courses that are older.
Nursing Leadership based on IOM recommendations and PDC recommendations has stated BSN will be preferred for hiring, our associates who are currently in AD programs will also be considered.
Want to provide additional information to our nurses specifically on AD to BSN programs.
Daniele asked about allowing AD nurses to work PT and receive FT Tuition reimbursement with requirement to work for a period of time post BSN.
Deb reported several hospitals across the nation are setting the limit at two years to start school and five years to finish school. Many hospitals are no longer employing diploma or AD graduates.
Forecasting model to move us to 80% BSN by 2020 was presented at Magnet Conference and provides detailed spreadsheets to enter data to help formalize plan. Data needed includes turnover by degrees, number of nurses hired by degrees and much more. While this may be a useful tool, our current PDC and Nursing Leadership Plan includes:
· Increase tuition reimbursement
· Increase discount contracts with schools
· Hiring preference for BSN
· Unit managers have been notified of their current percentages and goal to hit 80%
· RN to BSN requirements for all new hires effective January 1
· Partnerships with local schools of nursing
· Support of UCCS innovative model for dual enrollment to improve transition to BSN following AD
· Education requirements with specific positions including manager, assistant nurse manager, permanent charge nurse
· Nursing Orientation clarification of education requirements and research rationale for this requirement
· Education Fairs – planning RN to BSN education fair
· CAP recognition of BSN
· PDC goals for increasing % BSN by 2% for this fiscal year – will need to reconsider goals based on need to increase by 28% in 7 years which equates to 4% a year. / PDC recommends BSN preference for hiring, AD if our current employee. Nurses hired after Jan 1, 2013 will be required to be enrolled and in school for RN to BSN within two years of hire date and achieving BSN within five years of hire. Anyone who does meet either break point will be terminated.
Deb Kenny reports UCCS offers part time for RN to BSN program.
Sylvia Kurko meeting with UCCS to gather additional information on various programs. Also meeting with other schools with whom we have partnerships and discounts. Planning an Education Fair focused on RN to BSN opportunities. / Nov 2012
