Sidney N. Thornton, Ph.D. works as a Senior Medical Informataticist at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah. His responsibilities over the years have included clinical informatics and operational oversight for perinatal, pediatric, and laboratory information systems. His current projects include derived billing support through inpatient and outpatient clinical documentation. He serves as associate director for the Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research at Intermountain with responsibility for building partnerships with industrial research. He holds an adjunct research faculty position at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Department of Biomedical Informatics, where research interests focus on integrated clinical and administrative data systems. In 2002 he received the HR Warner Award at the American Medical Informatics Association for his foundational work in activity–based costing.
