My Life Story

My name is Shane Alison McCarther I am 15 years old and I’m 6’2”. I was born at the IWK on January 7, 1999, in Halifax NS. I live in Porters Lake in the same house I’ve lived in since I was born. I’ve gone to three different schools, in my grade primary to grade one years I went to West Chezzetcook Elementary. From grade 2-6 I went to Lakeview elementary. Right now I m attending Gatez brook junior high school grades 7-9 currently in grade 9. I started playing hockey when I was 7 years I’ve also played soccer football, ball hockey, swimming and also skiing. I play hockey for the eastern shore mariners. My mom’s name is Wendy McCarther, my dad’s name is Kent McCarther and my brother’s name is Josh Victor McCarther. My Grandparents from my mom’s side are Dianne Warner (Maiden name: Dianne Mannette, she has lived in Chezzetcook for over 70 years) my great grandmother’s was Acadian and she had recipe that’s come up through the family and that’s rappie pie. (It’s an Acadian dish) My great grandfather was Victor Warner. From my dad’s side Al McCarther and Mary McCarther (maiden name: Mary Lewis) I also have dog named charger. My great-grandmother was Acadian and some where down the line they came over here from France. From my dad’s side they lived in Amherst and then they moved down here because my grandmother was a nurse and she came down here because she got a job doing house calls.

My Community in the past

This is a land document from the first settlers in Porters Lake.

The first settlers to come to Porters Lake were the Mi’kmaq. They named it Amagunchech (the little breezy place). They came here to mind gold and they set up there gold mine on Thompson hill. The early settlers in the community were fishermen and gold miners. People who lived here in the past have left behind some documents (as seen above) of land deeds dated between 1791-1839, that’s a long time ago.

Did you know the founder of Porters Lake is William Porter?

My Community today

Porters Lake has changed a lot from the past because there has been many building and retailers built here. There’s restaurants, pubs, grocery store and movie stores. Here for fun you can play sports at local schools and community centers in the summer you can go swimming and in the winter you can go skating. For jobs you can work at restaurants, offices and the local vet. Challenges that Porters Lake face are it is crowded here right now and they want to add a subdivision with 600 homes do you know how crowed Porters Lake would become! I don’t like that there’s not much to do around Porters Lake. I think that they should build a swimming pool kind of like a Cole Harbour Place, I think that would be great for Porters Lake. Over the next 10 years Porters Lake is looking to build a new subdivision called 7 lakes. This is supposed to be put behind my house and I don’t want that. I hope that it’s a no go. Here is a few paragraphs on how 7 lakes build a community.

How We Build a New Home Community at Porters Lake

Our neighbourhood promotes sustainability in the following ways:

ECONOMICALLY

·  Contribute to the long-term economic sustainability for both existing and new businesses in Porters Lake by gradually increasing the population to support them.

·  Assist in increasing the tax base for the community which could then support both existing and new services.

·  Help increase employment opportunities in Porters Lake by working with local businesses to supply services during Seven Lakes' development.

SOCIALLY

·  Supply three (3) new HRM parks, including a sports field, for the enjoyment of all Porters Lake residents.

·  Maintain public access to both Bell and Fiddle Lakes for all Porters Lake residents to enjoy.

·  Be a source of pride for Porters Lake by being a model Conservation Community that is setting a new standard for the Halifax Region.

·  Assist community services by both maintaining and increasing diversity of programs through stable, predictable population growth over a decade.

·  Stabilize local school enrolment and help young families stay in Porters Lake by offering homes at an attainable price.

·  Offer home styles that accommodate a diversity of families at different stages of life.

·  Residents of Seven Lakes can support community activities by volunteering and participating in clubs and local events.

ENVIRONMENTALLY

·  Conserve and protect over 60% of the Seven Lakes natural landscape.

·  Help to protect wildlife habitats through the interconnection of natural areas.

·  Preserve the vital (or significant) wetlands and water courses to assist in maintaining recharge of the water table.

·  Install state of the art septic systems that use tertiary technology to help prevent contamination and are serviced and maintained on a regular basis.

·  Encourage the existing forest to continue to grow and follow the natural steps of succession.
