The Scout Movement was founded by Lord Robert Baden-Powell. In 1907, he held a
successful experimental camp on Brownsea Island, Dorset, with 20 boys from different backgrounds taking part in such activities as sports, boating, exploring, and fire lighting.
Today, Scouting is a global, educational youth movement, with 28,000,000 boys and girls in 216 countries around the world joining in the fun of scouting every week. Through the
adventure of Scouting, young people get to take risks in a safe environment and have their first taste of responsibility. We give young people experiences they will never forget:

Holme Valley Scout District is one of 14 districts in West Yorkshire and covers the areas of Holmfirth, Honley, Netherthong, Netherton, and New Mill.
Holme Valley District aims to offer challenge and adventure to all its members. We believein helping our young people fulfil their potential to develop as active members of thecommunity, to be self-reliant, caring, responsible, and committed:
They do this by workingin teams, learning by doing, and thinking for themselves.
We are working to make Scouting available to all and we are passionate about what we do. All this is made possible by the efforts of our dedicated, hardworking team of adult volunteers, who ensure that the programme delivered is fun, exciting, and safe.
The Scout Association's policies, rules, code of behaviour, and advice on child protection and safety, are there to ensure that our young people stay safe whilst they enjoythemselves and learn.

Adult Leaders and Helpers
Scout Groups are keen to encourage participation from parents who have a knowledge, skill, or hobby, which might be passed on. We also need assistance withfundraising events, maintenance of headquarters, or by becoming a committee member.
If you would like to help, please contact your local scout leader in the first instance.
The Leaders, Assistant Leaders, and regular helpers who provide the scouting
programme's each week:
- Are all unpaid volunteers, most of whom have full-time jobs and families
- Are insured whilst undertaking scouting
- Are given quality training and learn new skills
- Have passed a criminal records check (DBS - Disclosure & Barring Service)
Over 80% of adults volunteer because they are a parent of a current member, and manyhelpers attend on a flexible basis due to other commitments.

The Scout Group will:
- Provide a safe environment for children to enjoy themselves
- Promote equal opportunities for all regardless of gender, faith, or ability
- Communicate with parents to address any concerns they might have
- Provide adventurous activities and personal development opportunities
Parent/ Guardian undertaking to the Scout Group
The parent/ guardian and child will:
- Follow guidelines set out by the Group to ensure Health & Safety
- Help Leaders to address any discipline issues that might occur
- Recognise that the Group is a voluntary organization and will support the Group
where necessary (fundraising, maintenance of group headquarters etc.)
- Attend on their allocated dates on the parent helper rota (or arrange a swap) and actively assist withmeetings/outings
- Pay subscriptions in a timely manner

Subscriptions and Gift Aid
Scout Groups must pay a capitation fee for: insurance; training; administration;
maintenance of buildings and campsites; mains services; tents and other equipment;
badges and program materials.
Subscriptions are £120 per year, which may be paid by bank standing order of twelvemonthly payments of £10, or in three cheques of £40 each, dated 31 January, 31 May, and30 September, with the relevant year.
Bank standing orders are more convenient and you may either set one up online, orcomplete the enclosed form and take it to your bank. You may cancel your child's
membership and your payments at any time by contacting Sue Styring (below).
Cheques should be made payable to 6th Holme Valley Scout Group, with your child’sname and scout pack (e.g. Atlas Cubs, Honley) written on the reverse, and posted to:
