Substitute Teachers
Maintaining a supply of high-quality teacher substitutes is a top priority for the district. The online substitute system has more than 1,500 qualified substitutes currently available for daily assignments. Last year, many substitutes were not called for assignments on a regular basis because of the large pool of candidates in the SEMS system. To ensure retention of quality substitutes for schools, we are not accepting new general applications for daily substitutes.
As in prior years, we will gladly hire substitutes whom you refer to us.There are two simple steps:
- Principal or administrator completes the required attachedinterview form and submits the completed form to Denise Vonderharr at .
- Substitute completes the Substitute Profile at brings it with him or her to Human Resources for orientation. Please print the document and give to the substitute.This form has two tabs: Tab 1 is page one and Tab 2 is page two. Please make sure individuals completing the form get the entire document, which needs to be submitted as hard copy, not electronically.
We will schedule substitute orientations on a regular basis for new substitutes identified through this process. If you have any questions, please contact DeniseVonderharr or Robin Kane at 303-764-3525.
We have a list of long-term substitutes (LTS) that your HR generalist can refer to you. We will also continue to grow this list with licensed, endorsed teachers. Remember: If you hire a LTS, they must be licensed and endorsed in the area they are teaching.
Exciting SEA News!
Congratulations to the 140 secretaries that were certified in SEA (Lawson’s Self Evident Application) Manager self-service module during secretary training this year! We were pleased to have so many secretaries become certified during a two day period. Thanks to Bruce Randolph for the use of their library and computers. The warm environment was very conducive for SEA certification.
We are anxiously waiting to hear from those schools and departments that have not yet designated an individual(s) to become a SEA certified user.
For those schools and departments with designated users who have not yet become certified, please remind and encourage your designated user to become certified as soon as possible.
As a reminder, school principals are designated users and are encouraged to also become certified. Please share this information with the individual(s) whom you have designated as a SEA user. Look for more updates and tips in future issues of Tuesday Telegram!

Arts Infusion Program
The Arts Infusion Program is up and running again this year at the middle school level. The program infuses the arts into multidisciplinary curriculum, sustaining a positive learning environment. Students will utilize multiple learning styles: visual, kinesthetic, and oral. During the past six years, the Arts Infusion Program has proven that:
- Lessons are exciting, engaging, and fun!
- Students retain knowledge longer.

- Visual and kinesthetic learning is stimulated.
Governor’s Residence Tours
The Governor and the volunteers of the Colorado Historical Society are inviting third through sixth grade classes to tour the Governor’s Residence from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays on October 7, 14, 21, and 28. One adult must accompany every 12 students. Each tour takes about 30 minutes. Working with Artists
Working with Artists(WWA) was established in the summer of 2001 to provided year-round programs in photographic arts for young people and adults. WWA classes for young people have been offered through Art Students League of Denver and at LakeMiddle School. Their programs emphasize freedom of expression and creative skills along with chemistry, mechanics and physics, community awareness, and social interactions. Their current facilities include a 2,600 square foot studio in uptown Denver, with equipment for 35mm and 4x5 black-and-white printing. Walden Family Playhouse
The season opens with a live stage version of Holes, with the play written by Louis Sacher, author of the Newberry Award-winning novel. It runs from September 16 through November 2.This production is especially relevant for third-or fourth-graders through middle school. Due to the huge popularity of this production, seats are filling fast! Heidi runs November 18 through January 4and appeals to younger elementary students.Nautilus: 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, an adventure musical, connects to science standards 1, 4.3 and 5 and the learning themes of exploration and oceanography and runs January 27 through March 14. The final second season production, Kitty Hawk: The Wright Brothers, celebrates the 100thanniversary of this heart-pounding achievement in American history from April 6 through May 23.
Each production includes lesson plans tied to the Colorado content standards to help teachers extend the theatre experience into the classroom.
Walden Family Playhouse has some underwriting available for Title 1 schools (or middle school equivalent of 40 percent or more free or reduced-pricelunches). A limited number of tickets for Title 1 schools are available at a rate of $4.50 per student and teacher (regular school group rate is $7).Schools may apply for ticket assistance by filling out the attached form and faxing it to our box office at the number on the form.

Save the dates! Plans are in the works for half-day morning and afternoon customer service workshops for school and district office professionals on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, September 23, 24, and 25. Times, locations, and registration information will be available soon. Topics will include: the office professional’s role in school and district image-building; communication skills; customer service; telephone tips; and dealing with difficult people.

WHO?
All DPS library personnel are required to attend one full day of the fair and workshops. DPS days will be September 9–10. This is a required inservice you are expected to attend one day from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. No other districts may attend on the 9th or 10th (during the day). Ordering staff will be onsite for DPS these two days.
Teachers, principals, and literacy coaches are also invited to attend on September 9–10, 2003.

On September 10 (4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. only) and 11, DPS has invited other school districts and regional library systems to participate in our book fair. DPS personnelmay not attend on these days.

Summit Scholarships
The Colorado Nutrition Network and the Colorado Dept. of Education are offering scholarships for teachers, educators, and food service personnel interested in attending the HealthySchoolSummit on October 2 and 3. Conference registration deadline is September 26. Summit registration form is available at under What’s New or from your principal, superintendent, or district food service director.
1. CNN (Colorado Nutrition Network—funding for up to 10 teachers
To receive funding, teachers must:
- Teach in low-income schools (50% of enrollment qualify for free and reduced-price meals)
- Commit to provide classroom nutrition education by participating in a School Links project
(i.e., 6–12 hours of lessons) - Document hours spent at the Healthy School Summit
Teachers will be:
- Reimbursed up to $200 for a substitute teacher for two days; and
- Reimbursed up to $200 for conference registration, mileage, and/or hotel accommodations.
2. CDE Team Nutrition Teams—funding for up to 25 teams (one per school)
To receive funding, school or district teams must:
- Be a USDATeamNutritionSchool. Schools may request a Team Nutrition form or sign up at
- Be a team of three, one of which must be a school food service person. School principal and district school food service director’s signatures are required on the application (see page two).
School teams will be:
- Reimbursed for two days of substitute pay for up to two classroom teachers and one school food service personnel; and
- Reimbursed up to $267 per team for conference lodging and per diem.
CDE school teams attending the Healthy School Summit will receive priority for Team Nutrition grant funding available after the summit. Twenty-five CDE Team Nutrition Grants will be funded for up to $3000 each. Grant applications will be available at the Healthy School Summit.
CDE Team Nutrition Grant Projects must address each of the following:
- A COPAN/AFHK State Plan, school site nutrition action step;
- A Colorado AFHK (Action for Healthy Kids) goal;
- One of the USDA Team Nutrition communication channels, behavior outcomes, and messages; or
- A minimum of 6–12 hours of classroom nutrition education.
Healthy School Summit participants will receive information on the COPAN/AFHK state plan action steps and Team Nutrition at the Summit.

Since its restructuring last year, the DPS Foundation has established a focus to support after school programs that offer arts, athletics and extended learning opportunities to DPS students. The DPS Foundation is now pleased to announce its first Mini-Grants Competition for After School Programming. Through this grant competition, the Foundation will award a total of $200,000 to selected after school projects at DPS elementary and middle schools.
The DPS Foundation recognizes that for a student to be successful in the classroom, it is essential that they have a well-rounded education that also includes connection to the arts, athletics and extended learning opportunities. We believe that quality after school programs which offer these components lead to improved attitudes towards school, higher expectations of school achievement, better work habits, increased attendance and improved grades and test scores.
