DISCUSSIONS

MPI-M requests togetanentryas"originatingcentre" forGRIB1andGRIB2inCommonCodeTableC1andC11toallowreferencingitsfutureEarthsystemresearchproducts.

Productsfromthe MPI-M Earth system models are generated by at least 30 research centres world wide anddeliveredto many research groups using this for climate and climate impact research. As of today the current modelling system, based on the ECHAM atmospheric GCM and MPIOM ocean GCM, is running as a sub-centre of ECMWF from which the original atmospheric model was taken.

Over the past few years a new and independent model system has been developed jointly with DWD, the so-called ICON model system. This model system shall be used by DWD for operational weather forecasting and by MPI-M and collaborating institutions for basic research encompassing the whole Earth system. In order to support the DWD requirements for stability for its operational activities, and the MPI-M requirements for flexibility for its research activities, it would be of benefit to have a separate “originating centre” entry for MPI-M, thus allowing the identification of Earth system research products from MPI-M.
