For those who joined us at Longton St. Andrew’s church for our annual ‘out visit’, I hope that the presentation was both informative and enjoyable. I’m told that Sheena’s Victoria sponge and almond slices went down a treat. I wouldn’t know, never got the chance. As was stated in the tour, Longton has a very long history and the church has many interesting artefacts. If you would like a copy of the presentation, it will shortly be available from the Church, for a small fee. You can then go on your own tour at your leisure.
Tonight’s presentation by Ann Berry is about Joseph Garstang, a World War One conscientious objector, and is entitled ‘ A Document of Dissent ’. You can obtain a leaflet about Joseph from Preston libraries which tells the story of his life and takes you on a conducted tour of relevant places in Preston that are associated with him.
Just a reminder that the Irish branch mini study meeting on the 14th October will be looking at civil records covering BMD’s,meeting starts at 1pm. Details onlfhhs.org.uk website under Irish branch.

Many migration records are available to search and download on-line from The National Archives. These include passenger lists, naturalisation case papers and alien registration cards. The research guides explain how to use these records. If you find what you are looking for you can download directly from there for a small fee rather than using other more expensive websites.

On Friday, October 13th, (what-a-day-a-ta-pick) and each subsequent second Friday of the month, branch members will be helping out at the newly instigated family history research event at the Lancashire Archives from 10 - noon.
FamilySearch ushers in a new, digital model and has discontinued its microfilm circulation services, to instead make billions of the world's historic records readily accessible digitally online.All of the microfilm rented by patrons in the last 5 years have now been digitised by FamilySearch, a total of 1.5 billion images. New digital images will be made available as they are scanned in theFamilySearch catalogue. Would you consider volunteeringto be a FamilySearch Indexer? For those who would prefer to continue to use microfilm, the entireLondon FamilySearch Centre microfilm collection was transferredto theSociety of Genealogistsin Clerkenwell, London, earlier this year.
Could your ancestors have worked in the theatre? A large body of online data has been brought together on theSTAR website,to help family historians track down professional and amateur actors, as well as other people involved in the world of theatre. Most of the data comes from the extensive Ellen Terry and Edith Craigdatabase. In addition, many archive collections have been integrated to provide a combined set of over 34,000 theatrical records from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Katherine will be demonstrating the project at the Hull History Centre, from 2-4 pm on Tuesday 21 November, as part of aworkshopand talk on researching theatrical ancestors.
The Genealogical Society of Ireland has now moved into new premises in a modular building, behind the Loughlinstown Leisure Centre, with entry through the car park. The Centre opened on 12 July, with computer room and facilities for tracing family history fully open on Wednesdays from 10-4 and on Saturdays from 2-5.
A new edition ofthe Federation’s ‘Our Really Useful Australasian Information Leaflet’is available to download on their website This free resource focuses on how to research your ancestors if you live in Australasia. It is particularly useful for those with British roots. It is also great for UK family historians who may have had ancestors who went to Australasia, either because of forced transportation or due to emigration. The pdf lists family history societies that can help you with your research, due to their specialist knowledge. If you have hit a brick wall in your research, they will be able to give you insights on how to progress, due to their genealogy expertise and knowledge of the resources available.

Is any of your family history in the Bolton area? Members of Bolton Family History Society will be on hand at Bolton History Centre, Le Mans Crescent, Bolton, BL1 1SE, Saturday, 21 October, 10am to 4pm for advice on how to trace yourfamily tree. It’s a ten-minute walk from the new bus station and opposite The Octagon Theatre and the Town Hall. Buses every fifteen minutes from Preston, service 125/126. Journey time 90 minutes.
Peter Marsden, sorry, don’t know his bona fides, is coming to talk at Pendle Heritage Centre, Colne, on Thursday 28th September at 7.30pm. He is a local lad and is coming up from his home in the south to speak on the history of the Norse Vikings and their settlements in Lancashire and Yorkshire and the DNA link to these people in particular through the family of Marsden and Morley. If any member has these names in their family tree they may well be interested in this presentation. Coming up before our winter break is a presentation by Dr. David Hunt of South Ribble Museum at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 25th October, on the subject of ‘The Horrocks Family’ and at 7.30pm on 29th November it will be our annual Jacob’s Join social gathering and fun quiz.
