COURSE: The10-Mile course is a single loop. From Prouty Beach, west across Newport Bay, North up the west side of the lake, then east across Derby Bay and around three islands, then south, south west around The Bluffs and back to Prouty Beach. The course will be marked with 12 buoys. Swimmers will swim clockwise with the chart indicating which side of each buoy swimmers should swim. The event is a beach start and a beach finish, with a line in the sand serving as both the start line and the finish line. Time limit for the 10-mile swim is 7 hours, after which we reserve the right to pull any swimmer who has not completed. However, if the swimmer is swimming strong and there is sufficient support from kayak and patrol boat, in our discretion, we may allow the swimmer to continue. In the case of bad weather or other hazardous conditions or events out of the control of the Event Director, the entire event may be delayed, abbreviated, interrupted, abandoned or cancelled. No refunds will be provided.
10-Mile swimmers must have a personal escort on a kayak or paddleboard. We do not allow canoes. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to bring their own escort support. We have a pool of kayakers that can be assigned for an additional fee, on a first come, first serve basis.
QUALIFICATION: All 10-Mile swimmers are expected to have completed a 6-mile swim (without current assist) within the past three years and no later than July 2nd. The qualifying swim may be an event. It may be an informal swim with just a kayaker and a gps. 15 milers are expected to have completed a 10 mile open water swim, 6 milers a 4 mile open water swim and 3 milers a 2 mile open water swim. 1 milers are expected to have completed a 1 mile open water swim.
