EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCAITON PROGRAMS
Ruth Tryon brought forth information about the program changes (TABLED until next meeting) in the ECE Certificates.
- The ECE Infant/Toddler Group Leader Certificate will be changing to “Infant/Toddler Teacher Certificate”
- The ECE Preschool Group Leader Certificate will be changing to “Early Childhood Teacher Certificate”
- The Guaranteed General Education and Major Courses for Early Childhood Education Students will be changing
- The addition of ECE 260 to the new Early Childhood Teachers Certificate increases the total certificate credits to 18 which is being done to meet head start requirements at the state level.
- These program changes, although state mandated, still have to go through the CCCS program change approval process and then will be brought through the Curriculum Committee.
PROGRAM LAYOUT REQUIREMENTS
Kent explained the importance of new program layouts when changes to certificates and or degrees occur. Some changes can affect Financial Aid eligibility and may make a difference in whether approvals need to go through CCCS, CCHE, the Federal Department of Education, etc..
Kent also explained the only way to show program changes in the catalog and Degree Works audit reports is to have those changes come through the Curriculum Committee after they have first gone to CCCS for approval.
CIS 118 and DWD’s
Todd reported that his Arts & Sciences Division had reviewed all the Degrees with Designation (DWD) and decided that CIS 118 should be removed as an MCC institutional requirement on those DWD’s which had elective credit options. In doing so, we were allowing our MCC students the same “choice” as other students at other CCCS institutions taking the same DWD’s. CIS 118 can be used as an “ELECTIVE” for these programs but is not a requirement.
DWD’s in CATALOG
The articulation agreements mandated by the state are kept at the Department of Higher Ed website. CDHE said it doesn’t want us to put the program layouts in the catalog, rather that we put a link to their site in the catalog so students and advisors always have the “official” best copy of the agreement available.
FORMS
Jessica and Terri Eades are working on new forms for this committee to use. She is hoping to create an electronic page that would only pull in questions required based on the action being taken. Kent and Betty are going to assist them in determining the question paths.
ASSESSMENT
Jaylene will be asked the committee to discuss and approve the Assessment Committee’s new five areas of common learning outcomes that need to be added to each course’s syllabi. A beginning term/date needs to be decided. Kathy Frisbie will review the program outcomes before next meeting and Betty indicated that since this term has already started and syllabi have already been distributed, the earliest date/term can be summer 2012. Jessica will add this discussion item to next month’s meeting agenda.
CATALOG PROCESSES & TIMELINES
Betty and Kent gave an update on the 2011 catalog. It is an Online/Electronic version with an official “static” catalog being posted to the web (pdf version) and an updated dynamic online version with addendum items being posted regularly. They stressed that the Curriculum Committee’s work is essential to the keeping the catalog up to date.
The official catalog for the academic year (pdf version) will be published for each academic year on June 1. Anyone can print a copy of this version and it can be printed in full or just sections as needed. Some loose leaf versions will be printed for the area High Schools and counselors. Students can print as needed, and we may offer loose leaf versions for sale in the bookstore.
The 2011-2012 catalog will be posted to the web shortly and a March 1 addendum will be posted which will is good until June 1, at which time the 2012-2013 catalog will be out.
Addendums are scheduled to be published whenever registration starts for a new term –
November 1 – for spring registration period
March 1 – for summer and fall registration periods
June 1 – for fallregistration period which will be the new AY catalog ....and so on...
There will always be 1 static (pdf) catalog and 1 dynamic catalog with addendum online for each year. Covers will still be generated matching marketing themes.
The Curriculum Committee should be aware that program changes need to get into the catalog and addendums. The catalog is a “living” document to be updated all the time with Instructional items being done by Beth and Cathie. As such, documentation of changes will become important and forms may have to be developed for even “Informational Items.” The committee is charged to think about what information the Division Chairs want to give to Cathie and Beth for the variety of changes that occur throughout the year, from program changes to the inevitable, “I found a typo” changes.
It is hoped that since the document is updated as changes occur and then “Published” at set times, it will increase efficiency in catalog production, reduce staff/faculty/administration time proofing items, and speed production and publication times.
Terri Eades is investigating how much time it will take her to “hang” the new catalog to the web which will then give us a better idea of timelines for submission of changes to meet her deadlines.
