Approval of Minutes from June 4, 1999: The minutes were approved with no corrections or additions.

Inaugural Theme Presentation. David Taylor, Andy Perrine and Pam Brock of Media Relations, made a PowerPoint presentation unveiling President Rose’s inaugural theme “All Together One.” The committee suggested ways of publicizing the theme throughout the year, which included printing the statement on JMU stationery, on JAC cards, and on Employee Appreciation Day brochures.

Finishing the Commemorative Scroll. Tina announced that the last opportunity for staff employees to sign the commemorative scroll for Dr. Rose would be at the Faculty/Staff picnic on Friday, September 10. She asked for volunteers to work at the “scroll” table, which will be located at the entrance to the picnic area across from the Convocation Center parking lot. Carole Paulett, Ted Pelikan, Lisa Knicely and Tina Updike volunteered. Milla Sue Wisecarver will bring the scroll, the purple ink pens and the sign to the picnic. News items publicizing this opportunity for staff will be placed in the JM Universe, the JMU Extra, and on the EAC Web site. After all the signatures are collected, the scroll needs to be glued together, a beginning and ending message printed in calligraphy, and finished for presentation. Lisa Knicely and Cassie Henry volunteered to help with the finishing of the scroll. The calligraphy at the top of the scroll will be: “The classified staff congratulate Dr. Linwood Rose on the occasion of his Inauguration – September 17, 1999” and at the bottom: “We are proud to be All Together One.” (Note: the Faculty/Staff picnic was later postponed until after the Inauguration, therefore the scroll was circulated to various offices on campus by Carole Paulett, Ted Pelikan, Kathy Shuler, and Tina Updike for the final collection of signatures. Staff member, Loretta Grunewald, College of Business, did the calligraphy.)

Presentation of Scroll and Greetings from the Staff. Tina Updike will be part of the platform party for the installation ceremony at Dr. Rose’s inauguration on Friday, September 17, 1999. She will deliver the official greetings from the classified staff, a 2-minute speech, and present the commemorative scroll to Dr. Rose. The committee made suggestions for the presentation and agreed to critique a draft of the “greetings.” (Note: the signed scroll was 14 feet in length, attached to brass fitted dowel rods, tied with brocade ribbon, and presented in a purple velvet pouch tied with gold cord. Faculty member, Alan Tschudi, School of Art and Art History made the dowel rods and pouch.)

President's Inauguration. Tina circulated a draft of the inaugural calendar of events. Geoff Polglase updated the committee on changes and additions to the calendar. The EAC web site will include a link to the Inaugural web site. Tina related the Inaugural committee’s discussions of ways to compensate employees working inaugural activities while the rest of the staff are given time off to attend the inauguration

Meeting with Geoff Polglase to discuss the EAC Annual Report. Tina and Kathy Shuler, Employee Appreciation Day co-chair, met with Geoff on July 29 to review the 1998-99 EAC annual report and discuss the recommendations for activities in 1999-2000, including proposals for EAD 2000. The meeting was very productive and Geoff expressed interest in attending EAC meetings as his schedule allows. Tina will include Geoff in the distribution list of upcoming meeting dates and agendas. Geoff will respond back to the committee on the requests for additional funding for EAD 2000.

Next Meeting: Will be scheduled when the President appoints the new EAC for 1999-2000.

The meeting adjourned at 12:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Tina Updike, Chair
