RIMINIWELLNESS 2017 – FITNESS IN FIGURES

22 billion euros, equal to 2.3% of total consumption:this is families’ overall annual spending for activities dedicated to sport, wellness and physical conditions

Rimini, 31th May 2017 – An increasing number of Italians state that they practice sport regularly:in 2016 one Italian out of four said that he or she dedicated his/her leisure time to sports activity, a number that has constantly grown in recent years (from 2013 to 2016, there was an increase of 1.4%).

Another constantly rising figures is that of those carrying our actual competitive activities.From almost 240,000 in 2011 the number of athletes classified in competitive events rose to over 620,000 in 2016, with an increase of 21% between 2015 and 2016 alone.

The activities most practiced at competitive level are, in order, walking, foot racing, cycling, swimming, triathlon and skiing.

The regions with the largest number of those practicing sports are in northern Italy, with Trentino Alto Adige at the top of the “ranking” (with 36.2% of the total population), Emilia Romagna (31.1%) and Lombardy (30.5%). At the tail end in the other hand, are Campania with 13.9%, and Calabria and Sicily, both with 16.5% of the population practicing sports.

There are various activities dedicated to fitness and wellness, essentially targeting physical wellness not intended for competitive purposed, which involved thermal baths, spas, wellness centres, beauty and personal care services, used annually by over 18 million clients, and resulting in an overall annual turnover of almost 10 billion euros.

At local Italian level, the northern regions with the highest percentages of users are Lombardy (19%), Veneto (11%), Emilia Romagna, Lazio (both with 10%) and Tuscany (8%).In the South, good percentages are reported in Campania (6%), Apulia and Sicily (both with 4%).

A particularly important figure is that regarding tourism connected with wellness, which in Italy has a value of over 2 billions euros per year, with an average annual increase of approximately 9%.
