Expected outcomes

By the end of this training, trainees will feel:

-positive about their involvement in the survey process

-confident that they are well-prepared for the field survey operations (segmentation, mapping, selecting households, interviewing)

-confident that they are fully supported by the survey coordinating team.

Using a case scenario provided by the trainer, two trainees will volunteer to role play an interview in front of the other participants. As the role play isbeing carried out, all trainees will be able to follow along using their cellphone. The trainers will then lead a review and discussion of the questionnaire, section-by-section.

4:00-5:00Administering the Questionnaire: Practice in Pairs

Working in pairs, the interviewers will role play an interview based on case scenarios provided to them. The pairs will practice entering data on their cellphones, and gain familiarity with the survey questionnaires. The trainers will be available to coach each pair and answer questions. After the interviews, trainers will review the data that was captured on the cellphones.

Using a case scenario provided by the trainer, two trainees will role play an interview in front of the other participants. As the role play isbeing carried out all trainees will be expected to follow along using their cellphone. Feedback will be provided at the end of the interview by the actors, trainees and the trainer. Critical issues such as definition of a household, informed consent, definition of an eligible respondent, and closing the interview will be addressed.

Exercise: Interviewing Techniques and Tips. Working in small groups, the characteristics of an effective interview/er and the factors that detract from an effective interview will be identified by the trainees. Tips and techniques for conducting an effective interview will be presented.

Each small group will be provided with a set of case scenarios describing a household. The small groups will practice conducting an interview and recording data, using a simulated interview based on the facts provided in the case scenario(s). Facilitators will provide support and feedback. This will be followed by a debriefing of the exercise.

There are a number of procedures that need to be carried out to ensure the success of the survey and to obtain high quality data. This section leads the trainees through these procedures, and provides the chance to discuss issues that may arise and how to deal with them. The roles and responsibilities of the interviewers and the survey field supervisors will be discussed.

All surveyors and field supervisors will take part in a field exercise near the training site. Teams will practice and apply the field procedures as prescribed during training. Each interviewer is responsible to carry out at least two interviews, collecting data on his/her cellphone.

02: 00 – 3:30 Reflections on the Field Test: A Debriefing

Participants will carry out a self assessment of their performance during the field test. Discussion in teams will bring out the highlights of each team’s experience in the field. Large group discussion will focus on challenges that can be encountered, and the ways to address them.

Using a draft field survey movement plan and the maps available for each cluster, each survey team will review the itinerary and confirm if the sequence and timing is feasible. Trainers will receive the feedback from each team and finalize the survey movement plan.

All surveyors and field supervisors will take part in a 2nd outing/field exercise near the training site. Teams will have another opportunity to practice and apply the field procedures as prescribed during training, and each interviewer is responsible to carry out at least two interviews.

This session (covered over two days) ensures that all teams will be well-prepared as they head to the field. The topics covered include: fieldwork schedule and team itineraries, using maps, field expenses, accommodation and transportation, and communications in the field. On day 5, per diems will be distributed to each individual. All teams will be given the needed field supplies, equipment and materials.

9:30-11:30 Group 1: Meeting for Supervisors: Getting Ready for the Field

This session is targeted only for field supervisors, and includes activities and information that will help the supervisors to carry out their field responsibilities. The trainers will meet with all field supervisors to discuss cellphone responsibilities (maintenance, data management), supervisor and team member responsibilities, and logistics (maps, schedules, troubleshooting, administrative issues, contacts and communications). Supervisors will sign-out for the cellphones and supplies needed for their team. Technical issues and fieldwork procedures will be reviewed. A summary recap quiz (or other exercise) will be done.

Focus will depend on the specific needs expressed, and problem-areas identified by the trainers and the participants themselves. Trainers will be available to provide coaching and support.

Evaluation of Training

5:00 END OF TRAINING. TEAMS DEPART FOR THE FIELD AS PER INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY THE SURVEY COORDINATOR. The SURVEY will be carried out over five days. There will be a post-survey sessionon Friday May 13 for all members of the survey teams, and the NRC staff, to review preliminary findings and debrief. A certificate of participation will be awarded to participants during this session.
