Hours: FLSA Non-Exempt, Full time, 35 hours per week
Salary:Grade 6, FY19 six step range: $35.63 - $41.30 + excellent benefits
The Morrill Memorial Library is seeking a Children’s Services Department Head who will provide leadership for the department by performing administrative, direct service, supervisory and professional work in planning, directing, and conducting the activities of the Children’s operations of the Library. The Children’s Services Department Head has direct responsibility for two part-time permanent staff: one professional and one para-professional assistant and is under the administrative direction of the Library Director. This position will begin after July 1, 2018.
Essential Job Functions:*
- Directs the operations of the Children’s Department, including development and presentation of children’s programs; children’s collection development, including acquisition and weeding of materials; organization and staffing of the Children’s Room.
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons seeking children’s books, parenting materials, and professional materials relating to children and children’s services.
- Plans, prepares, and presents story time programs for preschoolers. Plans, evaluates, schedules, and publicizes programs for children’s entertainment. Promotes community awareness of the Children’s Department services and facilities.
- Provides services that promote an interest in reading and an appreciation of books and other library materials.
- Schedules and organizes library orientation, offers, prepares, and presents workshops and instruction for school department, community childcare providers and community groups such as the Girl Scouts, etc. on children’s literature.
- Informs students and teachers in local schools about library materials and services through library orientation programs, classroom visits, specialized bibliographies, classroom book loans, and book talks.
- Works cooperatively with school librarians; keeps informed of school assignments and projects that affect the library and its Children’s Room.
- Design, prepare and implement a summer reading program in conjunction with the Massachusetts statewide program.
- Serves on various library committees.
- Prepares and monitors the Children’s Department budget; prepares related reports.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Schedule Requirements:
This position is part of the Library’s leadership team. Attendance at department and staff meetings is required. One Saturday per month and one evening per week are required.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Library Science from an A.L.A.-accredited graduate school is required. At least two years’ experience in public library operations is required; five years of experience in children’s operations is desired. Supervisory experience is preferred.
