Information for Nominees to the Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) Committee

History & Purpose

The Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) Committee is comprised of members involved in many facets and roles within Australian motor sport. The aim of the committee is to increase the number of women participating in all facets of motor sport. With a relatively low participation and retention rate of women within the sport, it is crucial to develop programs to retain women, as well as create leadership pathways and opportunities for future development of women in motor sport.

In 2010 the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) created the Women & Motor Sport Commission (WIMC) to address this problem on a global scale. With the appointment of Leanne Tander as Australia’s inaugural delegate, it was decided to create a similar committee in Australia. In 2011 the Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) Committee was officially approved by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS), the National Sporting Authority governing body for Motor Sport in Australia. Since then WAMS has developed signature events and initiatives including: Junior Development Scholarship, International Officials Exchange programs, AGP Event Luncheons, WAMS Event Endorsement Package, Driver Opportunities offered by the FIA WMC and media aimed at raising the awareness of the successes of women across all facets of motor sport.

The WAMS Chairperson is voted by the committee and submitted to CAMS for approval. On approval, CAMS submits the nomination to the FIA Motor Sport Council for selection onto the Women in Motorsport Commission. The current Chairperson is Samantha Reid.

The current WAMS Committee comprises active working groups focusing on

-Officials

-Juniors

-FIA Driver Opportunities

-Media

-Funding/Grants

3. Each ASN should develop local programmes which highlight the opportunities available to women in motor sport
4. Each ASN should develop programmes including young driver detection cells at local and national levels
5. Each ASN should find creative solutions to network drivers and sponsors
6. Each ASN should create an online social media platform and community (e.g. Twitter and WhatsApp groups) which ensures that the contribution made by women in the sport is recognised at all levels
7. Each ASN should provide simple examples of motor sport career opportunities
8. Each ASN should ensure their promotional and marketing materials are written using the right adjectives for equal opportunities (This relates to the which looks at the different nuances of language that appeals to males vs females)
