The Civil Service Sports Council Eastern Region Shore Angling Championship 2017 is comprised of two events which are held to select a team of three who will represent the region at the 2018 National Shore Angling Championships. Competitors may fish one or both events but to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the regional team, both events should be fished.
The First Leg is to be held at Orford Island, Suffolk on Friday 10th November 2017 and the second at Aldeburgh, Suffolk on Friday 8th December 2017. After the 2nd leg Fish & Chips will be provided before the presentation which will be held at the White Hart public house Aldeburgh. The following rules apply to both legs :
· ***This year we are again going to fish catch and release rules with the minimum size limits being 18cm for all fish except for Bass, Cod and Whiting which will be NFSA size limits. All sizeable fish caught must be witnessed and signed in on your match card by your adjacent angler prior to your next cast being retrieved. I will give you all match cards and species to points conversion cards on the day of the event. Please could you ensure that you all have a fish measuring board and bucket for fish transfer prior to the event***.
· Anglers may have a spare rod made up with baited terminal tackle attached. If you are changing rods, the first rod must be fully retrieved (all line including the leader must be back on the reel spool and the rod must be placed in the rod rest) before the second rod is cast.
· Any mutilated fish (broken necks etc.) must exceed the species size limit by two CM’s.
· The team chosen to represent the region at the finals will comprise of the three anglers who attain the lowest points tally over the two legs. Points will be awarded on the following basis - heaviest Bag - one point, 2nd - two points, 3rd - three points and so on. If an angler fails to weigh in, they will be awarded points equal to the number of anglers competing in that leg. If an angler does not compete in one of the legs they will be awarded points equal to the number of anglers competing in that leg plus one.
· If over two legs, more than one angler has the same number of points, the longest catch over two legs will be determine the higher placing.

Shore Angling Championships 2017 - First leg.
Orford Island, Suffolk.
Venue : Orford Island, Suffolk.
Date : Friday 10th November 2017.
Time : 07:45 to 16:00 (approx).
Entry Fee : £12.00
Registration : Meet at Orford Quay pay and display car park no later than 07:00 on the day. Boats will leave the Quay at 07:45 sharp and will not wait for late comers, no exceptions.
------
This is the first of two legs which together are the CSSC Eastern Region Shore Angling Championships.
The boat trip to the island takes approximately 30 minutes and from the drop off point, a 200 yard walk across loose shingle is required to reach the beach. You will need Wellingtons to get on and off the boat and be prepared to use a short ladder. There are absolutely no facilities on the island and it is very exposed so you need to take everything you might need with you but that said, because of the walk required and limited boat space, only take what you really need.
Once competitors are ready, the organiser will give the signal to walk off. You may fish anywhere on the seaward side of the Island or in the river but you must be back at the drop off point at 16:00.You must also have an adjacent angler to witness and sign scorecards. In the interests of fairness, any competitor who returns late risks disqualification.
High tide is approximately 15.30(2.4m) and there may be a strong tide run for part of the competition. Distance casting is not required and a standard beach outfit capable of casting 5-6 oz should suffice but you may need fixed leads for a short time. Lead lifts can help to avoid snags which build up during settled weather…a “good blow” usually clears these.
The fishing at Orford can be exceptional and if conditions are right, it is amongst the best venues in the country. You are fishing from a steeply shelving shingle beach into deep water and likely species to be caught are codling, whiting, dogfish, pouting, dabs and possibly bass and Smoothhound. Often the best fish are caught very close in. Lug, rag, mackerel and squid are the most popular baits used there. .
In the event of inclement weather preventing boats from reaching the Island, the organiser will try to select an alternative venue to be fished on the same day dependant upon conditions. This however, cannot be guaranteed due to the exposed nature of this coastline. Start and finish times will be adjusted to allow for any travelling time required.

------
This is the second of two legs which together are the CSSC Eastern Region Shore Angling Championships.
High tide is approximately 14.30(2.8m).
Aldeburgh is a shingle beach which can produce excellent catches particularly during spells of rough weather. The beach is gently shelving and made up of sand and shingle.
The fishing venue will be on the town beach to the left of the Brudenell hotel. There is a path that runs behind the shingle beach so you can use a trolley.
Likely species to be caught are codling, whiting, dogfish, flounders, dabs and pouting with a chance of a bass. Lug, Rag, mackerel and squid are the most popular baits used there.
All scorecards must be presented no later than 17:30 at the beach car park.
A Fish and Chip meal and presentation is to be held at the White Hart Pub in Aldeburgh after the weigh-in.
