Health Careers Technologies Portfolio Content and Criteria
Students completing a health science cluster or program of study are encourage to complete a portfolio that includes the following areas as outlined by the the National Consortium for Health Science Education Certificate Program Student Portfolio Content and Criteria. Note: Many of the portfolio components may be met by participating in the Health occupations Students of America leadership events and activities. www.HOSA.org
1. Biographical Letter of Introduction Criteria: The portfolio letter of introduction is a formal letter addressed to the evaluation committee which is a narrative format summarizing the student’s achievements
2. Resume Criteria: The one page resume should include career goals, education and work or volunteer experiences, awards, honors, certificates and other activities. A list of professional references may be included or listed on a separate page
3. HOSA Project Criteria: The student should plan and carry out a healthcare knowledge/ skills application project or a project that requires problem solving and hands-on application. These may connect to HOSA activities completed in level 1 .
4. Work-Based Learning Criteria: The workplace learning or supervised practical experience must be documented by a summary of exact dates, hours, person(s) shadowed and description of the experience(s). The experience may include job shadowing, externships, volunteering, career exploration (site visits, speakers).
5. Credentials Criteria: Copies of Certificates or documentation that shows the student’s completion of training in healthcare competencies. Examples include but are not limited to: CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) , First Aid certification, CNA (certified nurse aide), first responder, EMT (emergency medical technician).
6. Service Learning (Community Service) Criteria: The service learning (community service) must be documented by a summary of the experience(s) and include dates, hours, location, learning outcomes, and benefits to the community at large.
7. Leadership Criteria: The leadership can be demonstrated by participation as a HOSA officer, class officer, student council, church or scout officer, or other leadership position in the arts, athletics or other organized school or community activities.
8. Writing Sample (Capstone Thesis) Criteria: The writing sample demonstrates coherent thought, follows accepted structural format for written work and is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors.
9. Oral presentation (Speech) Criteria: The oral presentation must be a speech or presentation for a school faculty, civic or community organization, local healthcare group, school class or a part of a HOSA competitive event with a submitted script.
10. Technology Criteria: Evidence will be examples of technology created by the student including Powerpoint, Prezi, IMovie, Glogster. Presentation should be creative, colorful, informative, easy to follow, with a good balanced use of pictures, clip art and white space. Presentation outline should be printed in color .
11. Other Content Criteria: other content may be added to strengthen the portfolio and meet local program requirements. This may include: Letter of completion, Passport certificate, special awards, recognitions or achievements, high school transcript.
