Regulations Governing Distinguished International Student Scholarship

- NationalChengKungUniversity (hereafter, the University), in an effort to promote the recruitment of distinguished international students, raise the international profile and integrate relevant resources, has formulated the following regulations.
- The source of the scholarship is as follows:
(1)Subsidy from the Ministry of Education.
(2)The University Endowment Fund.
(3)Grant from the Project of Promoting Academic Excellence and Developing World Class Research Centers (hereafter, the Project).
(4)Revenue generated from contributions and donations.
- The number of recipients and scholarships awarded is dependent upon the total number of international students as well as the fluctuation of the funds (in item 2) andadjusted accordingly.
- Award Timeframe: From enrollment until graduation, withdrawal and/or suspension.Students who extend their study period are no longer eligible.
(1)Undergraduate students: Limited to six years for medical students, five years for architecture (design division) students, and four years for the remaining majors.
(2)Graduate students: Two years for Master’s and four years for PhD students. Master’s students who advance onto a PhD program have a five year limit.
- The university’s Distinguished International Student Scholarship is divided into the following two categories:
(1)Distinguished International Graduate Student Scholarship: Recipients in this category may be entitled to waivedcredit fees, miscellaneous fees and accommodation fees as well as a maximum monthly stipend* of 15,000 NTD (PhD students) and 8,000 NTD (Master’s students), respectively.(* Some departments may require participation in assistantship positions.)
(2)Distinguished International Undergraduate Student Scholarship: On campus accommodation fees waived.
(a)New students: Based upon the ratio of admitted undergraduate international students, top 20% will receive full tuition and miscellaneous fee waivers, 30% will receive full tuition waiver.
(b)Returning students: Based upon grades and class ranking of the previous semester.
- The top 10 percentile of their class will receive full tuition waiver, miscellaneous fee waiverand a scholarship award of 20,000 NTD.
- Students falling within the 10.01%~15% range will receive full tuition waiver, miscellaneous fee waiver and a scholarship award of 15,000 NTD.
- Students falling within the 15.01%~30% range will receive full tuition waiver.
(3)Accommodation fee waiver is applicable to the lowest on-campus fee. Students who choose to live elsewhere will not receive any additional grants.
- Eligibility:
(1)New students: The Admissions Committee reviews all international student applicationsand grant scholarships concurrently.
(2)Returning students: Officially enrolled international students who have completed one year or more and meet the following requirements:
(a)Graduate students: Must have taken at least 15 credits in the previous academic year, achieved an average score of 80 or above and not possess any demerits on their school record. Students who have completed all required credits should submit a recommendation by their advisor as well as a thesis plan.
(b)Undergraduate students: Must have taken at least 12 credits in the previous semester, achieved average score of 75 or above and not possess any demerits on their school record.
- Application Period:
(1) New students: Concurrent with international student applications.
(2) Returning students:
(a)Graduate students:
- Fall admittance: Apply annually in respective departments between August 15 and September 30 each year.
- Spring admittance: Apply annually in respective departments from the end of January to end of February.
(b)Undergraduate students: Apply twice a year, fromAugust 15- October 15 and February 1 – March15 in respective departments.
- Application Materials:
(1)New students: Concurrent with international student applications.
(2)Returning students:
(a)Graduate students: Application form, valid ARC, current passport (and Taiwan visa), proof of study (obtained from the Registrar’s Office), copy of post office account book, official transcript, and other relevant documents as required by individual departments.
(b)Undergraduate students: Application form, valid ARC, current passport (and Taiwan visa), proof of study (obtained from the Registrar’s office), copy of post office account book, proof of class ranking (obtained from the Registrar’s office).
- Review Period:
(1)Graduate students: Award period is one academic year and is evaluated on an annual basis.
(2)Undergraduate students: Evaluated on a semester basis.
- Conditions:
(1)Recipients who withdraw from school or defer admission must reapply for the scholarship upon returning. The original scholarship amount is deemed invalid.
(2)Registered students who hold work visas or have a pending status on their ARC may only receive tuition fee waivers, misc. fee waiver, credit fee waiver and accommodation subsidies.
(3)Recipients who participate in an exchange program or short term research will not receive the scholarship during the time abroad. The original reward timeframe may not be extended.
(4)During the award period, aside from summer and winter break, recipients who take personal leaves exceeding one month will have their scholarship paused immediately. This does not apply to extenuating circumstances or students who received prior departmental approval.
(5)Credit fee waivers may not exceed the number of credits required to graduate within respective departments.
(6)Recipients who violate university rules and receive a warning or penalty of greater severity will be revoked of their scholarship beginning the month after the penalty is issued.
- Recipients of this scholarship may not jointly receive any other government offered scholarships. Violators are automatically disqualified from receiving this scholarship and must return the full amount.
- Matters not stipulated in these directions shall be governed by applicable existing regulations.
- These guidelines have been approved for implementation during the ProjectExecutiveCenter meeting and the University Administrative Council meeting, along with any amendments if they are made.
