Annual Essay Prize Awards for 2018
Henry Lee Swint Award
Each spring, the Department of History awards $250 to the author of the best research paper or essay in any field of history. This competition is open only to undergraduate history majors and excludes History honors theses. The papers must have been completed for a Vanderbilt history course during the F2017, and S2018 terms.
Paul K. Conkin Award
Each spring, the Department of History awards $250 to the author of the best paper in U.S. history. This competition is open to all undergraduate students but excludes History honors theses. The papers must have been completed for a Vanderbilt history course during the F2017, and S2018 terms.
Samuel T. McSeveney Award
Each spring, the Department of History awards $250 to the author of the best research paper or essay written for a freshman history seminar (History 1111 or another1111 course taught by a history professor). The papers must have been completed for a Vanderbilt History HIST 1111 course during the F2017, and S2018 terms.

All essays must be double-spaced clean copies, without instructor comments. Attach a cover sheet indicating the class for which the paper was originally written (course number, course title, term, and instructor) and the prize or prizes for which it is submitted. If you are a graduating senior please note this on the cover sheet.The paper cannot be revised from the version that was handed in to the class. An entry may be considered for more than one prize if it meets the eligibility criteria, but each student may submit only one essay per award. Give your paper to Heidi Welch for Professor Daniel Usner, Prize Committee Chair, Department of History, Benson Hall, Room #227 by April 13, 2018 by noon. Eligible papers include those from Spring term 2017 that were submitted after April 12, 2017 (deadline was end of May 2017 for these papers); Fall 2017; and Spring 2018 terms.
Papers completed after April 12, for a spring 2017 class, can be submitted up until the end of May 2017 for consideration to the Spring 2018 Prize Awards.Any questions should be addressed to Professor .
