Goal: All students will improve their English language proficiency to help ensure future successes and personal ambitions. We will focus on Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Students will receive one English credit and one elective credit for successfully completing these classes. The ELL Newcomers English I class is counted as an English credit, and the ELL I Lab class counts toward an elective credit.

Expectations: All students will do their best. Students will come to class prepared to learn and will contribute to the success of everyone.

BE HERE AND BE ON TIME…you cannot succeed if you are not here. In-class experiences and activities are essential for your learning.

BE PREPARED…bring your binder, library book, and pencil or pen to class every day.

HAVE A GOOD ATTITUDE…do your best. Accomplish something daily and end your day by saying, “Today I learned…”

OBEY ALL SCHOOL RULES…follow school and classroom rules along with the policies.

RESPECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS…including school property.

Agenda/Procedures: Meaningful learning will not take place in an environment that is threatening. To create an absence of threat, we will use an agenda and procedures. An agenda is the teacher’s plan for the class, which is shared with the students so they can anticipate the events. Procedures are routines providing structure and order giving students an idea of how to do certain activities to use time wisely.

Classroom Procedures:

  • You should be seated when the opening and closing bells ring.
  • Students who were absent or tardy need to bring a pass from the office with them to class.
  • Make-up work may be picked up before school, during seminar, after school, or at the end of the class period, NOT during class time.
  • Pick up after yourself, push your chairs in at the end of class, and do not leave things on or under your table.
  • Do not talk when others are talking, during tests, and other instructional activities.

Classroom Rules:

  • Practice academic honesty. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses. Plagiarism is defined as follows:

1) Taking three or more words in sequence from anyone else’s work, printed or electronic, without giving credit 2) Using anyone else’s ideas and organizational plan (even if the words are your own) without giving credit

  • Electronic equipment is not allowed in class (unless approved by Ms. Stevens).
  • Food/Candy (including gum) is not allowed (unless provided by Ms. Stevens). Water with a secured lid is acceptable.

Grades:Grades earned in this class will be posted every 6 weeks. The six-week grading periods will accumulate into two semester grades. Grades will be based on the following grading scale:

A= 90-100

B= 80-89

C= 70-79

D= 60-69

F= 59 and Below

There will be a daily grade based on the accuracy and completeness of written material done during class time, student participation within individual and group learning activities, and time spent on task.

This includes:

reading books and other materials

note taking and information gathering

writing assignments

working on individual and group projects

research in the learning center

oral participation in discussions

cooperative learning activities

When class work involves an assessment of student participation, points will be awarded as follows:

10 points = Proficient

7 points = Progressing

5 points = Not meeting standards

0 points = Not cooperative

Depending upon the activity, making up class work may or may not be an option. If the activity cannot be made up and the student has an excused absence, the grade will be an “X” and will not count against the student. If the absence is unexcused, the grade will be a “0.”

the following choices will cause you to lose points:
