Course Description: Chemistry is a yearlong course in which students study properties, composition, structure and interactions of matter.

Topics to be covered:

  1. Intro to Chemistry: Laboratory safety, scientific measurement and calculations, density, and scientific method.
  2. Matter and Change: Properties of matter, particulate view of matter, chemical symbols, formulas and equations.
  3. Atomic Structure and Nuclear Chemistry: Models of the atom (historical and present), subatomic particles, types and properties of electromagnetic radiation, atomic orbitals, electron configuration,spectroscopy, and quantum mechanics. Fusion, fission, and radioactive decay.
  4. Periodic Table: Metals, nonmetals, metalloids, trends and patterns of the periodic table.
  5. Chemical Bonding: Ionic, metallic and covalent bonding.
  6. Chemical Formulas and Compounds: Naming ions, writing formulas and laws that govern formulas and names.
  7. Chemical Equations and Reactions: Writing chemical equations, balancing chemical equations, types and rates of chemical reactions, catalysts, effects of heat and concentration of particles during a reaction, conservation of mass and equilibrium.
  8. Moles: moles, mass and volume relationships.
  9. Stoichiometry: arithmetic equations and chemical calculations.
  10. Gases and Gas Laws: Properties of gases and gas law calculations.
  11. Acids, Bases and Salts: Hydrogen ions and acidity, strength of acids and bases, neutralization.
  12. Organic Chemistry: hydrocarbon compounds, functional groups and naming.

* Please note that the teacher may adjust these topics of study and important concepts at any time in order to accommodate student learning.

Methods: The methods of learning for the students will include but not limited to:

Book work: Chemistry in the Community – ChemCom American Chemical Society.

Cooperative learning: hands on projects and labs.

Note taking: used to provide a firm understanding of the material.

Bell work: used to get your brain activated for what has been covered and ready to learn for the day.

Classwork: working either independently or as a class to solve chemistry problems.

Quizzes: given throughout unit used to assess comprehension of material.

Tests: given at the end of the unit to assess overall comprehension of the unit.

Lab Reports: will vary from formal labs to quick lab write-ups.

Homework: concepts and problems to practice at home.

Needed Supplies:

  • Scientific calculator (TI-30 or up)
  • White board marker(I will collect these for use throughout the year)
  • Pencils, and blue or black pens. Occasionally colored pencils will also be used.

Class Rules:

  1. Be prepared for class: This means in your seat with all necessary supplies and ready to learn when the bell rings.
  2. Respect others: No derogatory comments will be tolerated. Mutual respect for each other and each other’s things will be expected at all times.
  3. Lab rules will be discussed for every laboratory and followed AT ALL TIMES. Students will be expected to work in the lab group assigned and do their fair share for every lab.
  4. Listen to directions and pay attention.
  5. Follow the school handbook.
  6. Respect the instructor as well as the classroom.
  7. No food or drink in the classroom with the exception of bottled water. In the laboratory absolutely no food or drink.
  8. No cell phones.
  9. Cell phones will be stored promptly when the bell rings. I will not tolerate cell phone use in class.
  10. Students will be expected to remain in their seats until the teacher dismisses them at the end of the class period. Congregating by the door will not be allowed.
  11. Students will be issued four hallway pass coupons to be used per quarter.

Absences:

It is the responsibility of the student to make up the work they missed. All make up work will be due by the number of days the student was absent plus one day. Students may not make up work from unexcused absences. Refer to the student handbook for details outlining absences and make up work.

Grades and Evaluation:

Grading scale:

100-90% =A, 89-80% = B, 79-70% =C, and 69-60% = D

Graded Work:

Bell work/Notes: 5%

Homework/classwork/quizzes: 20%

Lab work/projects: 20%

Tests: 55%

A final will be given at the end of each semester

All papers should have the student’s name, date, class period and assignment title written on the upper right side of the paper.

Talking or “perceived” talking during a test or quiz will be considered cheating. Student will receive a zero and written referral.

This syllabus is for students and parents/guardians to keep for reference. Feel free to contact me anytime (note that I may not be able to answer e-mails/calls during instructional time, but will get back with you ASAP). Success will depend on your student’s effort and attitude, as well as encouragement from you. A parental/guardian signature and student signature are required to acknowledge you have reviewed the classroom policies and expectations. Attached is the signature form.
