/ Richard’s Regis High School Graduation Celebration
Congratulations to Richard Handoko, our Exchange Student from Jakarta, Indonesia, who completed his senior year and graduated from RegisHigh School. In recognition of his accomplishment, our Club rolled out the green and white carpet, including a cake, card, gift, the requisite balloons, and a few congratulatory remarks.
Cindy Hofacker, representing RegisHigh School and C.A.S.E., thanked our Club for the opportunity to host the academic part of Richard’s Rotary Exchange. She commented that Richard was an active member of their student body. In addition to being an excellent student, he was on the math team, the JV basketball team, and was the number four singles player on their tennis team. Richard was also involved in various music and choral groups, including being a part of the fall musical.
Hofacker proudly concluded that Regis can now claim Richard as their first and only alum from Indonesia.
Next, Robin Shih, our Youth Exchange Counselor, thanked everyone who helped make Richard’s Exchange experience a success, including his host families, the Regis community, his host families, Club members, and last, but not least, Youth Exchange Officer, Sherry Mohr.
Finally, Sam Stagliano presented Richard with a gift and gigantic graduation card signed by all Rotarians. Sam and Richard then exchanged Rotary Club flags.
Our Club to Assist in Housing Costa Rican Delegation

The City of Eau Claire has formed a SisterCity relationship with Miramar, Costa Rica. A delegation from Eau Clairevisited Miramar in January, and now a delegation from Miramar, including the mayor, head of health services, head of tourism, and head of the coffee cooperative, will be in Eau Claire for July 2-13, 2008.
The Eau Claire Sister Cities Committee, chaired by Dave Adler, has requested that Rotary provide housing for the 8-member delegation. Our Club’s Board of Directors asked me (Mark) to go ahead and seek both Rotarians and non-Rotarians in the community who would be willing to host members of the delegation. The Sister Cities Committee is arranging tours during the day, including a business day, an education day, an agriculture day, a health day, and more.
We will need six evenings of housing for the 8-member delegation. (The other evenings will be spent in a hotel.) We would like to assign two delegation members to each of the homes. Assuming that Rotarians might find six evenings burdensome and will want to limit their hospitality to just three evenings, we will then need a total of eight homes.
We would very much appreciate volunteers from the Morning Rotary Club and our Club to host members of the delegation in their homes. If you, or someone you know, can volunteer, please contact me (Mark Morse) at or 839-8857.
In addition, at our Monday, July 7, noon Rotary meeting, the Costa Rican delegation will be doing a presentation on Miramar and Costa Rica.
Literacy Project Update
During the 2005-06 Rotary year, “Service Above Self” was the Rotary International Theme and ‘literacy’ was one the areas of emphasis. With that backdrop, a committee, under of the leadership of Laura Talley, embarked on a mission to identify a literacy project to benefit the ChippewaValley.
After much deliberation, the project selected was to develop Literacy Kits that contained various learning materials for three different age groups, and to provide these kits to local agencies that could in turn loan these kits to their clients. Identifying the contents and assembling the kits was completed in collaboration with the FamilyResourceCenter.
Laura provided an update on the project and introduced representatives from four local groups that are making use of the literacy kits:

- Mary Jo Hite – Western Dairyland Head Start.
- Gerald Wilkie – Bolton Refuge House.
