Chapter 2 Goals:

  1. To understand that God reveals the truth (aka his divine revelation) to us in through scripture and tradition.
  2. To trust that scripture and tradition guide us in knowing how to live
  3. To listen to God’s word in scripture and follow the guidance of tradition

Chapter 2 Outline

  1. We Want The Truth
  2. Hard to tell the difference between truth and opinion? rumor? false information?
  3. Lots of what we see on tv, social media are persuasive but is it the truth or what somebody else wants us to believe?
  4. We need to be careful, because we want the decisions we make to be based on what is true and what is right so we live a good life.
  1. Scripture and Tradition Reveal the Truth
  2. Divine Revelation-the truth of how much God loves us is communicated through written word and living message
  3. Scripture (sacred scripture, the Bible)
  4. 73 books written over a span of 2,000 years by people under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
  5. Divine Inspiration guarantees that scripture contains God’s word and ensures it is his truth--no mistakes.
  6. Old Testament
  7. Developed by ancient Israelites / Hebrews (our faith ancestors) first by telling stories by word of mouth and later by writing it down
  8. Synagogues were places to study scripture
  9. First 5 books of our Old Testament =The Torah
  10. New Testament
  11. Developed by Jesus’ apostles and disciples first through word of mouth and then through writing and INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
  12. Included Jesus’ life, miracles, teachings, parables, lessons, passion, death and resurrection
  13. Used these writings to go and teach about Jesus
  14. Created a community of disciples who proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God and Savior.
  1. Epistles- Letters written to early Christian communities about Jesus’
  2. Gospels- accounts of Jesus’ life
  3. Book of Revelation
  1. Tradition- the revelation of the good news of Jesus as lived out in the church, past and present--it LIKE AN ONGOING PERSONAL MESSAGE THAT HELPS US UNDERSTAND THE MEANING BEHIND THE SCRIPTURE
  2. We use all the church has learned with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and apply to our daily lives

  8. Essential to our lives as catholics because it helps us understand and live God’s truth.
  1. The Church Lives By The Truth
  2. “The Deposit of Faith” is all the truth contained in scripture and tradition

**Revealed by Jesus to Apostles, their successors--today’s pope and bishops, priests, and entire church

  1. Community-We gather to pray, worship, hear God’s word in scripture and to discover God’s truth
  2. When we gather together at mass on Sunday, holy days
  3. Magisterium- The church’s teaching office that guides the church consisting of the Pope and bishops
  4. Guided by the Holy Spirit helps us interpret scripture and tradition
  5. New issues and questions that arise are scrutinized so that we can understand God’s divine revelation about them
  6. Helps us to understand how to apply scripture and tradition to our lives
  7. They write letters, documents and make statements for the church to read/hear and follow
  8. Faith is from one generation to the next is shared and built upon. God’s revelation is always active and strengthened.
