Language Arts Syllabus
1stNine Weeks
Reading:
- Identify key ideas and details in literature and informational text by:
- answering the questions who, what, why, when, where, and how.
- determining the central message or moral in a story, and/or
- describing how characters respond to major events and challenges.
- Explore story structure, rhythm of phrases, text features, characters' point of view, and author's purpose.
- Demonstrate understanding of a story or text.
- Identify supporting information toward key points.
- Continue to improve overall reading levels as well as develop fluency, phonics and word analysis skills.
Writing & Communication:
- Write opinion, informative, and narrative texts.
- Strengthen writing through guidance and support.
- Research and present the knowledge they have gained through projects and shared information.
- Participate in group discussions with peers.
- Present key ideas either orally or through other media.
- Ask and answer questions from orally presented information in order to clarify information or deepenunderstanding.
- Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and details.
- Create audio recordings of stories or poems. And, add drawings or other visual displays to clarify ideas, thoughts orfeelings about a story or experience.
- Demonstrate command of standard English grammar when speaking and writing including
- collective nouns and irregular plural nouns,
- reflexive pronouns,
- past tense and irregular verbs,
- adjectives and adverbs,
- the ability to expand and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences,
- appropriate use of capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing, and
- the use of reference materials, such as dictionaries, to check and correct spelling.
- Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, and listening (i.e. compare formaland informal uses of English).
- Use a variety of strategies to clarify the meaning of unknown or multiple-meaning words found in 2nd grade content.
- Understand word relationships and nuances in word meanings. ln other words, students will expand theirvocabularies.
2nd Nine Weeks
Reading:
- Identify key ideas and details in literature and informational text by:
- Answering the questions who, what, why, when, where, and how.
- Determining the central message or moral in a story, and/or
- Describing how characters respond to major events and challenges.
- Acknowledge different points of view of characters including by speaking in a different voices when dialogue is readaloud.
- Know and use various text features.
- Use context clues to determine the meaning of words and phrases relevant to the topic or subject area.
- Demonstrate understanding of a story or text.
- Compare and contrast 2 or more versions of the same story, or 2 or more non-fiction texts on the same subject.
- Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in a procedural text.Identify supporting information toward key points.
- Continue to improve overall reading levels as well as develop fluency, phonics and word analysis skills.

- Explore different points of view of characters including by speaking in a different voices when dialogue is read aloud.
- Know and use various text features.
- Use context clues to determine the meaning of words and phrases relevant to the topic or subject area.
- Demonstrate understanding of a story or text.
- Compare and contrast 2 or more non-fiction texts on the same subject.
- Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas, or steps in a procedural text.
