A guide to the whole Northway, I-87, from Albany to Canada thru the heart of the Adirondack Parks, the Best part of NY State. For business, attractions, outdoor & services by exits, Covers Lake George, Schroon Lake.

  • Some Facts & Trivia:
  • The Road is posted 45 mph from US 20 to Exit 1, then 55 mph from the Thruway Exit 1 to Halfmoon, Exit 8, MP 10. Then it's 65 mph all the way north to Exit 42 in Champlain, where it's 55 mph again for less than a mile before the Canadian Border.
  • From US 20 in Albany to Canadian Border 177 Miles or 285 Kms.
  • If you are looking for Lake George, use Exits 20–22. Lake Placid, Keene Valley, Whiteface Mtn., use Exit 30
  • Interstate 87 is totally in New York State.
  • I-87 is the Major Deegan Expressway in NYC, the NYS Thruway from Westchester County to Exit 24 in Albany, then it’s our Northway to Canada.
  • Cell phone service is dead from Exit 28 north to at least Exit 33, though improvements are expected
  • The old road is US 9, which it follows & crosses. Most businesses are there.
  • It's 6 lanes to Exit 22, Lake George, then it's 4 lanes all the way north to Quebec, Canada
  • The Adirondack Park starts in Lake George, MP 51.4 between exits 20 & 21 and ends north of Keesville between exits 34 & 35, around MP 142
  • Covers five counties: Albany Exits 0-7, Saratoga Exits 8-17, Warren Exits 18-26, Essex Exits 27–34; & Clinton Exits 35-44

  • Hunting Info:
  • Big Game, deer & bear, started on October 20 goes to thru to December 7
  • There is a late bear season in December
  • The whole park is in the Northern Zone
  • You can hunt on almost all public land providing you are at least 500’ from a building. Private land, you need permission.
  • No loaded guns on any motor vehicle or boat underway, except for handicap ATV
  • Blaze orange is not required, neither are back tags in northern zone.
  • Hunters: Please be really careful! For the rest: the Adirondacks is large and hilly, has relatively few hunters so it is very safe for hikers and others in season.
  • Fishing Info:
  • NYS has free fishing days, when ?
  • Most of the Adk is in Region 5
  • Trout is usually from 4/1 to 10/15 but is open all year on the Hudson River, Lk George, Schroon Lk, Kayderosseras Creek & Moreau Lake, all near or under I-87
  • Alewife or blueback herring bait is illegal in Region 5
  • Bait fish is usually illegal in trout waters
  • Don’t ask me for tips, it would be a waste of time for both of us.
