FOND DU LAC COUNTY HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION
DAIRY HERD BUILDER PROGRAM

The purpose of this activity is to promote 4-H and FFA dairy projects by providing a means of purchasing desirable Registered heifer foundation calves, emphasizing the value of Registered animals, production, pedigrees, and cow families.

The activity itself promotes the purchase of Registered heifer calves born of the most recent year, for the establishment of a Registered herd of dairy cattle. Funds will be obtained interest-free to the applicant for a portion of the purchase cost of the foundation animal (up to $1,000).

All bona fide 4-H members having completed one year of the dairy project and FFA members having one year in the dairy project are eligible. If special situations arise, the Herd Builder Program Committee consisting of the Fond du Lac Holstein Association Board of Directors, will take appropriate action.

The Herd Builder is awarded once per lifetime. Preference will be given to project members involved in other dairy activities. Persons must be 18 years old or younger, at the time of application.

Each 4-H or FFA member applying will be screened by the Herd Builder Committee to receive the dairy calves. The Herd Builder Committee will have the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders’ Association set aside $1,000 for the purchase of the animal. Application forms are due December 31, to the Fond du Lac County Extension Office or to the Herd Builder Committee. Accepted eligible applicants will have one year to purchase the animal. If the applicant fails to purchase an animal in one year, he or she must again reapply for the Herd Builder Award.

Whichever comes first; the animal becomes 24 months of age or at the calving of the dairy animal, the member must pay back the amount obtained from the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders’ Association. However, if the member wishes to pay back the money before the 24 months are up, he or she may do so.

If the member is unable to pay back the funds at the end of the 24-month period, the Committee will arrange the sale of the animal, with the Fond du Lac County Holstein Breeders’ Association being reimbursed and the project member keeping all proceeds over costs of sale.

The applicant may pay for life insurance covering the purchase of the animal if he or she desires.

The various sponsors will provide funds, interest free, for the purchase of the animal. The amount provided by the sponsor may cover a portion ($1,000) of the purchase price depending upon the price of the animal.

The various sponsors are providing to members, funds interest free, until the animal is twenty-four (24) months of age or when the animal freshens, whichever comes first. However, if the member wishes to pay back the money before the twenty-four months are up, he or she may do so.
