JOB DESCRIPTION: Communications Officer

Salary: £21,826 pro rata (0.8 FTE)

Location: NWWT Head Office, Bangor

(option of NWWT East Office, Mold, for discussion)

Responsible to: Fundraising Director

1. OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POST

·  To inspire people about the work of the Wildlife Trust, thus increasing its influence and raising its profile

2. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBLITIES

·  Preparing and ensuring adherence to a coherent overall communications strategy (for Wildlife Trust members, non-members and key decision-makers) and budget

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s 4-monthly magazine, Natur, including:

o  Sourcing stories and pictures and compiling overall content

o  Acting as lead editor both for design and text

o  Co-ordinating the magazine’s distribution with the Trust Administrator

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s online presence (website and social media), including:

o  Sourcing stories and pictures and compiling overall content

o  Acting as lead editor both for design and text

o  Ensuring content is regularly refreshed and kept topical

o  Providing relevant training for other members of staff and volunteers, where appropriate

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s relationships with media outlets, including:

o  Preparing and ensuring adherence to a coherent media strategy and budget

o  Preparing press releases or other appropriate tools to obtain media coverage

o  Maintaining databases of media contacts and Wildlife Trust coverage

o  Responding to external enquiries from media sources

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s marketing and profile-raising, including:

o  Preparing and ensuring adherence to a coherent marketing strategy and budget

o  Sourcing and co-ordinating materials for the Wildlife Trust’s presence at events/venues, co-ordinating attendance with the Fundraising Director

o  Promoting Wildlife Trust events, whether organised by staff or volunteers, through all appropriate channels

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s image management and branding, including:

o  Preparing and ensuring adherence to brand guidelines, both visual and for text

o  Co-ordinating the design of the majority of Wildlife Trust-branded items for external consumption, including reserve interpretation (e.g. panels, boards); any other printed material (e.g. leaflets, handbooks); project websites – and liaising with other Wildlife Trust staff as appropriate

·  Leading on the Wildlife Trust’s role in UK/Wales-wide campaigns

·  Leading on the availability and effectiveness of the Wildlife Trust’s internal communication channels (e.g. with other staff, volunteers, trustees) and monitoring their effectiveness

Qualifications / ·  Be educated to degree level / ·  Possess a degree in a subject relevant to the post
·  Possess other qualifications either in design or copy-writing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / ·  Be able to tailor communications to a variety of audiences
·  Be familiar with the principles of branding
·  Be familiar with a range of computer packages, including Microsoft Office
·  Be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of website management and social media
·  Be able to work flexibly under own initiative
·  Have previously demonstrated the ability to market an organisation’s aims and activities / ·  Have experience of working within a voluntary sector setting
·  Demonstrate an awareness of environmental sector in Wales
·  Be able to speak, read and write in Welsh
General / ·  Be able to demonstrate a passion for wildlife and environmental issues
·  Be empathetic, especially with volunteers

4. SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

Salary: £21,826 pro rata (0.8 FTE)

Annual Leave: 24 days plus bank holidays pro rata

Sick leave: In accordance with the Department of Health’s Statutory Sick Pay Scheme.

Pension: Contribution of 6% towards stakeholder pension scheme.

Probation: New entrants to the service shall be subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

Notice: Period of notice to terminate employment is one month’s notice from the employee, and 1 week to 12 weeks (depending on time in service) from the employer.
